Good choice of tyres?

Hi - 9 months into MX5 1.8S (2004) ownership and faced with my first important decision regarding tyres. Backed into a corner before Christmas I replaced 2 of the original Bridgestones with Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3’s. Have now commited myself to matching the GSD3’s on the front. Good choice?

I have them on my Zafira & am well happy. Have also read lots of 5 drivers use them to so i would think they would be a good choice.

No doubt others will recommend Toyos or something else but if you are happy with the 2 Eagles you have already then i can`t see why you would want to change. [Y]

I went from Bridgestone RE720, the best all round tyre I have ever driven on, to Goodyear F1’s. The Goodyears are excellent, difficult to do a direct comparison as I changed up a wheelsize at the same time. In your case definitely go for the goodyears, and keep all 4 tyres the same

In my limited but reasonable experience - ive had 3 5’s and had several different tyre sets - the Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 was the best tyre for general and fast road use with the vary occasional track day or instructor day.

Toyo’s are a little cheaper, Hydragrips are a bit better in the wet and particularly snow and various others excel in other departments but overall you cant beat the GSD3 for all round excellence if you want a tyre for all mx-5 occasions.

Cheers Dave.

HiQ told me today they are waiting for their next delivery of Goodyear F1’s (due beginning of February) once they’re fitted I’ll let you know my thoughts. Bring on the Ashes Geoff!

Only on my first 5 Jonathan; can’t really explore the grip afforded the Goodyear F1’s just yet with the weather being so **it. Thanks for the knowledge I’ll feed back my experiences in due course.

Mmm Totally off topic I  know, but 2 sides in total disarray, should make for some interesting cricket…my money is still on the Aussies

I have after reading a few posts on here - decided to go with the Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3’s.

£376 - fitted, blanaced and tracking included. Thought that was pretty good myself.

I replaced 2 of my tyres for Eagle F1 GSD3’s a few months back & had them fitted & balanced for £95 a corner, that was a pair of 205/40 R 17s. £376 seems a bit pricey for just 2 IMO

Are the 14" Eagles (were GSD2, never got updated to GSD3 with the 15") now totally dead and gone?  If so, Toyo Proxes T1-R were the usual alternative in the smaller size.
