Well, i love my UK 94 Mark 1 so much that it only gets used once or twice a month due to me not wanting to put mileage on the vehicle as i keep it as a showcar(she’s only done 64k:))
Now the thing is i of course want to drive my 5 as it is the best thing in the world and so much fun, i even dream about it but all i really do is wash the car twice a week and take endless photos of it without really driving it anywhere!
And so i am seriously considering a second Mark 1 to use as a more frequent car and then i can keep my besty UK 1.8 for special occasions. I think at the moment in the current climate it is easier to do a bit of wrangling with the vendor of the car as i have seen a few Roadsters for sale with decent mileage(75k miles or thereabouts). And i reckon i could get one of these for around 1500 sovs and this has got me really tempted to own two mark 1’s and the thought of this literally makes me dribble with lust!(Plus i’ve kind of always wanted air-con which of course my UK Mark 1 doesn’t have sadly)
Now the thing is, does anyone else own two or more 5’s and how do you feel about this? any views on the subject much appreciated!
For a month I had my Mk3 and my old Mk1. It was frivolius to keep both but I found it incredibly hard to let go of my Mk1, as I had a strong ‘bond’ with it lol. I too considered jkeeping it just as a picnic vehicle and the 3 as daily driver, but economics got the better of me and I also decided it wasn’t fair to make my Mk1 watch me driving off in the Mk3 every day. I found it a good owner and let her go. Having siad that I have been trawling Ebay lately for a cheap Mk1 as a project car so it’s not a bug that is easy to shake!
You can’t beat having a fleet of cars, but maybe not two the same. Why not get something else cheap and interesting for your daily driver? For a long time I had a mk2 MR2 as my daily car and used the MX5 just for track stuff. I just sold the MR2 for 400 quid.
The best thing about having a fleet is the contrast you get between the different cars makes them all seem just a bit more special than they would be if you drove them every day. The MR2 made the MX5 seem compact, light, easy to work on and less terrifying to throw around when it’s cold and wet. Seems a waste to get a pair of matching cars.
Yeah - got three. Talked my wife into one first for her commuting and me to play with at weekends. Didn’t work out though. She loved it so much I just got to drive it to the gas station and garage! Saved up and bought myself the Little Red Roadster.
Both have been played with, tweaked and driven. After 3+ years we almost simultaneously decided we needed another one as a project, as we’d done all we wanted to our daily drivers.
She wanted a black car, I wanted a Turbo, hence ‘Black Betty’. Turned out to be one of the missing black LM cars and has had much love and attention lavished on it and is - well they all are - our pride and joy.
Today she inherited a little money and her first words were ‘I can get another Mazda - any colour I like!’ Will she? Mm. Maybe, maybe not - but it’s the thought that counts
Yes it’s mad, it’s extravagant - but you only live once.
Ha! All three are different. Hers is stock with electric everything, mine is mildly tweaked and lowered - without PAS, electric aerial or electric windows.
I had 3 at once - a mark 1 California, a Le Mans, and a mark 2.5 yellow Arizona. I’ve only got the Le Mans now - I am sometimes tempted to get another mark 1, but so far have resisted it. Go on, get another one!!! [:D]
Well to be honest i figure that at my stage of life; late 20’s, single with no kids and only a single Mark 1:), i think like Doug Passell says you only live once and i figure if i don’t go for dual-Mk 1 ownership now i may never have that fleet of Mk 1’s:)
I also think to myself; my previous two cars before my 5 were a 1.25 Fiesta Zetec(which was quite nippy and a nice car if i’m being honest!), and then an '02 VW Lupo which i traded for my 5. Now to be honest for sub 2k there just isn’t any other car on earth that compares to a 5 as far as i’m concerned where you can get the whole wind in your hair convertible sports car thing, and a decent spec car to boot. MX-5’s are just so reliable, never had a problem with my current one and it is a true smile machine so i’m struggling to resist the temptation to have another one:)
Rest assured pictures and info will follow if i do go ahead and purchase another one!,
The Le Mans is a true poser’s car - you have to be able to cope with the attention to drive one of those! It makes me smile every time I go out in it. (but I pose in the S2K as well!!!)
After using my 2005 Icon day and daily for the last 3 years now at 50k miles I decided this winter to give it a rest and do some long awaited mods to it as I have decided that this is going to be a life long relationship. when it came to deciding on a second car for winter use it just had to be another 5, picked up a 98 1.8se 60k full history nice condition and will probably keep along side my Icon although I can’t help looking at other 5s on the market so you never know there may one day be a collection, must be a disease is there a known cure?
Currently I have three 5’s and the better half has one of her own.
I cant stop buying them, but to be fair ive only bought the third one for the wheels (lemans type wheels, missing from my LM) so as soon as i get a decent offer this one will be gone.
The Second Is the Lemans and enough said about why I wanted that.
And I am lucky enough to have a RC that i can use for more running around etc.
Go ahead and buy one, its only a bit of fun after all!
I’m inclined to say if you want a second car get something different and perhaps more practical, (but then I am an old f@rt) then perhaps your 5 will feel even more ‘special’ when you drive it those couple of times per month.
I used to have a 1975 Series III LandRover which Iused to get out and about in 2-3 times per month - my daly drive at the time was an 02 Clio which was a brilliant little car - but when I got back in the Landy I realised just how special (and a challenge too!) a 1975 vehicle was to drive.
