Grimsell Pass

OK I know, it’s a wee bit out the way but, if your ever in the area (and believe me, it’s worth the detour) the Grimsell Pass in Switzerland is 14 Km of pure, unadulterated fun! I have to say I cycled up it but on the Sunday we climbed it the local Ferarri owners club and every motorbike in the area were out playing. Ever heard a brace of classic Ferarris belting up a mountain? Have a look on Google Earth, there is a great bikers cafe at the top by the lake and monument that do a cracking lunch.

We started in Brig, to the south and then up via Grimsell to Innertkirchen for the night. Having climbed Simplon Pass the day before as we left Domadossola in Italy it meant we had climbed around 8000’ in two days!!!  This was halfway through a 3 week bike ride from Bosnia back to the UK and we only went via Switzerland “because we could”!

I’ve always fancied taking the 5 there though…would anybody be interested in a roadtrip?

The hairpins are so close to the glacier that you can hear the ice crack as the sun hits it!!!

Fantastic route, we came up from Gap via the route Napoleon and the petite and grande saint Bernard passes, then from Crans along the Furkastrasse through Brig to Gletsch, rather than turn up the Grimsel though we turned left and over the Furka pass and then down the old cobbles of the Gothard Pass. This year the Grimsell is on the list though

Here are a couple of pics from the top of the Furka pass looking out and over to the Grimsell pass in the top of the picture.

Crikey, those photos bring back memories!!!
