Could I please have some advice on how to store the hardtop, I am going to get a storage bag for it but currently do not have anywhere to hang it. I expect I should have thought about this before I bought the car, but hey ho never mind!
I’d have to agree with Geoff here - stick it on eBay, especially if space is tight - I’ll take the money off your hands if you don’t have space for that either [:)]
I put it in my van when its not on the car, This way I’m forced to fit it back on the car because I can’t do my job with a vehicle full of roof. If I didn’t put the lid back on at the end of the day and my '5 got stolen or the roof slashed I’d be kicking myself.
I’d put it on the settee or some other place thats in the way if I hadn’t got the van.
You don’t necessarily need to hang the hard top up, Its quite happy on the floor if you leave it the right way up (Try to avoid letting the deck seal sit on concrete though as it’ll pick up grit and knacker the paint on the rear deck), You can also lean it against a wall, Standing it up on the chrome rear clamps, Just put something over it to stop it getting scratched (Ideal time to clean the rear window). I wouldn’t recommend this for long periods though (Months), Fibreglass can sag over time, This can happen to one piece kit car shells when they’re sat outside for a long while, When the owner finally trys to fit it to the chassis nothing lines up (I’m not saying it WILL sag, The hardtop’s quite a substantial lump so it probably won’t, Just don’t sue me if it does).
I would say your lucky you got one already on the car, Hard tops are strange. If you sell an MX-5 with a hard top you might only get as little as 100 extra notes for the lot (Despite it usually having a very good condition soft top hiding underneath) , But to buy a hard top alone costs between 300 and 600 quid. Buying a '5 with a hardtop gives you the choice to use it, Not to use it or sell it on.
