Hardtop chrome locating screw studs (loose) Rip off.

For anyone who has this problem,  I took my car to a very well know MX5 dealer, who quoted me £120 + vat  to: remove the soft top/remove the trim from behind the seats/drill a hole each side so as to get something on it.(his words) then get mole grips to grip the stud so as to tighten them up. This would be repeated on the other side. Then he said he could fill the holes he drilled with a suitable gromet. He said “these are trouble”[:^)]

Well this is what I did.

First removed the plate in boot on left hand side(four ten mm bolts)

Removed space saver wheel.

Found the correct size socket(15mm deep 3/8" drive)+ medium extention and rachet.

Found correct fitting screw driver.

One shot of WD40 down each stud.

Located socket on back of stud and tightened.

Repeated on other side.

Took me twenty mins all in. And that includes putting everything back.

No drilling and no £120+vat.[:D]

If this is trouble to them, I would not want them working on my car.[:O]

Please don’t take this the wrong way, But I just read this three times and still can’t understand what he wanted to do?.. Was he wanting to cut “Access holes” into the vertical area just rear of the parcel shelf?

If he was, I’m starting to worry about what else this moron would do in the name of car repairs, There could be local paper headlines in his future after he tries to weld a half full petrol tank or something.

He pointed to the area just behind the seats, saying that he would have to cut a hole on each side to gain access.

I knew he was talking rubbish straight away.[;)]

He probably started being a mechanic after he lost his job as a brain surgeon… because he used to get confused and start making the first incision on the patients 4rse cheek… [:D]

(Talking of “4rse”, They’re his favourite band… Oh, Hang on, There called “Elbow” ain’t they. He’s always muddling them two up isn’t he?) [:D][:O][:D]

Are you sure he wasn’t a Banker who’s just been retrained.   [:O]

What makes this worse was the fact that one of the owners was there too and he was backing him up, and pricing the job.

The touble for him is that I taught mechanics for over ten years in FE college. So although may not be familiar with all jobs on every car, I’m well equipped to see through their plan.[:)]
