alright guys just joined up got myself mx5 mk2 its gold in colour and got a soft top. when i got the car the soft top was not very good so i have just purchased a hardtop, but it is green so i am going to get it resprayed. had few quotes and they all seem very steep from £250 to £300 they all mentioned that i had to get a proffesional to take the rear heated screen out. can you guys tell me is this true or is it easy to take the beading off to take the rear screen out? it would save me some money if i can do this myself or do i have to get the screen out by proffesional? any help would be great guys[*-)]
What is wrong with carefully masking it off with masking tape? Are they trying to say that all bits would have to come off if your car needed a respray? Are you wanting it sprayed the same colour as your car or a colour that compliments the cars colour? To get the rear window taken out, you then risk damaging the newly painted top when having the window refitted. Sounds like an expensive job to me.
I’d be more inclined to just put up with it till a gold or black hardtop comes up for sale, Then flogging yours. I think it would be cheaper in the long run.
In a few more months when summer comes they’ll be dropping a little in price anyway, People want the roof down and get sick of tripping over the hardtop in the garage / shed / spare bedroom.
change of colour + change of rear glass = sounds very expensive to me
I think change of glass should always be done by some expert with special tool
if you get both done in garage/body workshop I think it will be roughly 400-500 mark at least
If i were you I will sell your hardtop and buy another colour matched hardtop and if your wallet is not tight I guess would be a better idea for you to buy a good one before you sell your one now I assume you sell yours for 300 and you can probably get one in this season for about 350ish?
I had a complete re spray a few months ago, and the windscreen was removed. The sprayshop bloke said that he would mask etc, but wouldn’t guarantee the finish around the screen. Cost $35 to pull and replace by windscreen fitter
35 Australian dollars? Thats about 20 quid isn’t it? If I’m right That was the bargain of the year.
About 2 years ago the cheapest I got quoted over here was £80 to remove and replace the same screen on an S13 200sx I was going to buy, I would have needed to get the screen out to treat some rust. In the end I realised after looking for 3 months, If the best one I found needed rusty bits sorting it doesn’t bode well for the build quality in the first place.
I am wondering though, Are the hard top screens bonded in? After looking at mine I’m not so sure they are.
