Heavy condensation MK3.5.....not always the obvious

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __Mk3.5 RC owned from new. 34K miles
  2. I’m based near: Congleton

Read much over the years about leaking Mk3 cars.
Mine too was suddenly heavy with condensation…and the scuttle leak had long been cured. Being an RC it wasn’t the drains…
The culprit was the o/s rear light gasket which had failed. That in turn had caused the rear light to have water in it. Being cold I hadn’t spotted it as it pooled at the bottom. This in turn found its way into the boot under the mat out of sight.
New gasket from MX5 parts and removed light fitting. There was surprisingly little left of the old gasket and an awful lot of crud.
Dried out the boot and scraped the remains of the gasket off and fitted the new gasket after trying to dry out the light completely. This proved remarkably difficult even with a hairdryer and leaving it in the airing cupboard. In the end having to use the car I put the light back…took about three weeks of warmish weather and driving with the lights on to clear.
