New member here, and i’d like to say hello to all of you MX-5 owners out there. I currently don’t own an MX-5, but hopefully that will be changing very soon. I’ve driven an MX-5 Mk1 before and instantly loved the feeling of it, but until now i’ve resisted the urge to buy one, probably because while i was growing up my dad always said things like “they’re not the most practical of cars…” and i guess it rubbed off on me a little! Anyway, I guess I signed up to get some advice really. I’ll post some more detailed questions in the relevant forum areas, but i have one or two to ask right here! I only have about £2000 to spend, and i wondered if this would this get me something reliable? It would be my only car and would mostly be used for a daily 5 mile commute to work, and days out at weekends. Also, what age/condition should i expect to get for this price?
Thanks in advance for your replies.
Graham
greetings graham.
your £2000 will buy a good mk1. mine is nearly 20 yrs old & is used every day & is reliable.
you will get plenty of advice on this forum.
as to being practical, depends on what you want. i get a medium suitcase + wifes make up case plus lots of shoes, bottles etc packed loose all in the boot.
word of warning. get help/advice when viewing a car. if it looks, feels, drives good then put it on the wish list.

Hello Graham,
Last month spent £2k on a 93 mk1 Roadster with 55k miles on the clock, years MOT, full service, etc. and immaculate nic inside and out if that helps gives you a guide to what you can pick up…
Been using it on 7 mile daily commute and blasts at the weekend in the country is proving to be ideal and most fun that’s legally possible [:O]
Wow quick response! That’s this is really useful information. It kinda scares me buying a car this old though. Maybe it’s because i’ve never bought anything quite like this before…
How important is the milage on a car like this? Are there any typical expensive jobs which need doing when they hit a certain age?
Hi Graham,
Age, mileage isn’t really an issue as long as they’ve been looked after, make sure you look at a few. General Information folder in the forums has definitive guide to buying an MX5/Roadster and guide for things that go wrong, both hugely useful.
Enjoy the search, great time of year to get one.
Hi Graham and welcome.
All good advice above, I suggest having a look at the cars for sale on this forum, you rarely find a club member that doesn’t spend far too much on his/her '5! An AA inspection (if your not confident on what to look for) is, IMHO money well spent when you think you’ve found the right car.
BTW I use mine as the wekly commuter 160 miles up and down the A1 as well as the families 2nd car / father & son project, it’s never let me down, reasonably economical (barring my right foot) and easy to work on myself - I have zero technical expertise but have gained what I need to know from on here.
Good luck in the search,
Jon
G’day mate, welcome to the Forum
Buy on condition not mileage. In the main these engine/transmissions are good for well over 150k miles. Worry about rot around the end of the sills at the rear, and the rear wheel arches
