I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: suspension bushings
Its a long story, the short version is I cut the rear suspension bolts, and now I have one of the bushing, stuck in the arm, with the rubber and screw stuck in the inner, while the other side is maybe free?? rubber and inner sleeve of the bush are out as they sheered during the attempt to open the bolt but I am not clear if the suspension bush have outer sleeve.
I am not clear on : Does the bush have outer casing in the suspension setup ? if so how do I get it out ? from my current efforts nothing moved when trying to “extract” what could be a sleeve or equally be part of the part casting is the wheel hub ???
lastly, I got this bush, and now I am not sure if its the correct one to use .. Powerflex Rear Knuckle Lower Strut Mount Bush PFR36-612 for Mazda MX-5 Mk4 ND 2015-
if anyone know where I can get instructions, or what I need to get the car back on the road, that would be tremendous help.
FWIW, it all started with some knocking noises at low speed, bumps and turning, and ‘someone’ suggested replacing the top mounts, I’ve taken advantage to try and lower it a bit , ATM the car is fairly high in the air so springs are Eibach Pro and I hope I never need to touch the rear again
Its the suspension strut bush (lower point for the shock to meet the car), not the spherical bushing, I had searched through the forum prior to asking.
Yet, advice is appreciated
I think that it will be a case of removing the whole hub and taking it to someone that has a press. The DIY solutions require you to be able to pass a treaded bar through the bush.
Alternative is to try and burn the ‘rubber’ out thus releasing the inner and left over bolt. You then will be able to cobble a puller using threaded bar to get the outer metal piece of the bush out. Or use a hacksaw to carefully split it.
one of the questions is what does the bush looks like , does it have an outer metal sleeve, or is it a rubber on shaft bush not in case din a metal sleeve.
taking out the rear hub is last resort.
I need to look at my car to see exactly where you are. You say you have the replacement bush, is that not the item you are trying to remove? Sorry is I am misunderstanding your problem.
does this bit need to come off?
what is the expected size of the bush?
Did I buy the correct part ?
How do I get the car back on the road outside of buying two replacement rear hubs and a huge set of bolts?
The above is a picture of the lower shock absorber mounting. The bolt passes through the bush and is secured into the captive bolt welded to the shock absorber.
Is this the bush you are talking about? Is the shock absorber free? It is difficult to see what is what from your photo.
The replacements you have appear to be the correct ones. The outer metal of the new one should match the diameter of item you have pointed to, do they? It would appear that the inner tube and the rubber part of the bush have come away and left the outer tube (the part you have indicated) in the hub. Is this correct? If so then yes that part needs removing.
Without being there it is not easy to be absolutely confident about your predicament so proceed with the utmost caution.
As this was a proper saga I thought i’ll update here.
few things:
The wheel hub ‘lip’ is part of the suspension bush, the bush is incased in a metal sleeve.
if the bush is stuck, its easy to drill the rubber around, freeing the inner sleeve, and hacksaw the outer one.
A BIG bush pusher/puller tool is highly recommended if done on the car, if you have the hub out, use a press.
I ended up turning couple of pushers, but m10 rod is not strong enough for the job, the pushers did come in handy at the end so not total waste of time.
