hi everyone. this is a really useful forum that i have enjoyed reading for some time.
last year i bit the bullet and bought a garnet red montana from the IOW. i had wanted one for a few years and bought the 3rd montana i test drove. i loved it so much i got carried away and bought another, a classic red mk2 sport! for that one i had to travel to macclesfield but it was worth it.
i can’t really justify 2 cars and don’t really get enough time behind the wheel but we will see how it goes.
both have hardtops which i haven’t taken off yet! i have tried a couple of times with the sport and i have read various instructions on this forum and elsewhere but am not very confident and don’t want to damage anything.
so is anyone fairly local to winchester that would be willing to give me a hand? i would be happy to come to you.
although i have inspected the montana at the dealers with the hardtop off i haven’t seen the sport’s softop yet so i am keeping my fingers crossed that all will be ok! i know it isn’tthe right way to do things but i guess i took a calculated risk it being v low mileage 1 owner example etc.
anyway there you go thats my obsession with the mx-5 out in the open. (i have been checking the ads for a mk1 but i have been good and resisted the temptation so far!)
Welcome Montanared… 2 mx5’s I love your style and I must say am a little bit jealous LOL
Anyway - you can remove the hardtop on your own (I have dont it with various convertables over the years) in fact - I have never done it with anyhelp.
I understand your concern with damage so the best way to do it is to cover the boot lid an any areas the hardtop may come into contact or need to be rested on with a soft cloth/towel etc.
This way you can rest the edge of the HT on the car withour risking any damage to paintwork etc. After a couple of goes you will be an expert and more confident obviously.
If I were close (I’m in Scotland) I would have helped but hey ho. The HT can make the 5 look great especially in red but hurry up and get out topless in this crips February air!
Crisp?
Down here it’s damp and foggy.
[:(]
Its that “crisp” up here I did the 12 mile journey to work this morning with the roof down at 7:30am… very exhilirating with the only victims being my rosie cheeks when I arrived LOL
For long may it continue and I hope the crispness is with you soon

Hi Madboy thanks for the offer and the advice.
Funny enough i
was in Scotland yesterday it was quite a nice morning but lousy weather
from Carlisle down. glad i wasn’t in my mx5 but it would have been
great driving your side of the border.
cheers!
hi Geoff cheers mate!
Hi Harco thanks for the info and the offer.
it sounds like a very interesting day and as i am not very technical minded it may be just what i need!
so hopefully i may see you tomorrow.
Sun is shining here. GET YOUR KIT OFF! Only nancys have hard tops anyhow. [:D]
Anyone know of any tech days happening around the midlands?
Cheers and enjoy a near Spring day.
Phil…
Hi Montanared, nice car!
I can only echo the others when they say GET THAT TOP DOWN(you can take your fingers out of your ears now)
So get out there and have some open air driving fun!
Cheers
Ben
yup
get 'em off.
it’s lovely & sunny here inthe midlands today, even my wife only had 1 sleeveless jacket on when i dropped the roof.

PS; Welcome
Hi and welcome, I have had my 5 since oct and as yet I have not plucked up the courage to go topless, worried I wont be able to get it back up…
Hey Caroline,
Please don’t be worried about having the top down on your 5. In my experience the MX-5 roof is one of, if not the most reliable convertible tops around and i really wouldn’t worry about not being able to get it back up!
Go for it! you’ll never want to go out with the top up after having it down, it really is pure exhilaration and just so much fun fun fun[:)]
Cheers
Ben
Mmmm. There should be no doubts how easy it is to get your roof back up so drop it babe and enjoy.
However I assume no pun intended but a few male members (!) of this forum may have other ideas… [:D]
My roof was down today and I even got a wave AND a flash off another Mk1.
Welcome,
Phil …
Hi Phil thanks i think! [:)]
i have always liked the look of the the mx-5 with a hardtop and my names not nancy!
anyway the sun shone today and it was a good first time with my kit off. cheers.
hi Ben cheers. if i had the money i would have bought another montana off ebay today (was a steal) but thats another story.
yes i took the top off and staggered into the house with it.
then off i went zooming along the country roads hereabouts. i had a great time. it really does add a different dimension to the mx-5.
even more fun…[H]
thanks joe. everyones made me very welcome.
i wish id joined a long time ago when i started looking for my first mx-5.
