High guys, first post so be gentle! I an in the process of restoring a rather poorly looking eunos, but is as solid as a rock mechnically, or was until now! You see, I’m having idle issues that I’ve not come across before. The engine starts, and runs as smooth as silk on choke at around 1200rpm. This then settles down to the usual 850-900rpm range. No problems there! However, once the engine is up to normal operating temp, the idle rises to 1200rpm again, and if you rev it to 2000rpm and hold it, the engine starts to lose revs briefly, before picking up again. This is like a pulse. It doesn’t run lumpy, and will rev smoothly. Only happens at 2000rpm. Any suggestions? I’ve cleaned the TB, and run cleaner through the idle control valve(lots of blue smoke from exhaust), but nether has helped. Plugs are brand new, and I have Magnecor leads that are only 12 months old. I’ve researched the forum, and I can’t find a vacuum leak, one other suggestion being the coil pack. Does this sound likely? Any help would be appreciated. I love my car to bits, and once the re-spray is done in the spring, I want to be able to get out on the roads once more!
It is a 1.6. I have a k&n fitted, but that’s been on for over 6 months with no problems whatsoever up until now. I have just ordered a fault code booklet and LED so maybe that will shed some light? I remember having problems with an old audi a4 that I had once, and after the battery went flat one time, the engine was running a little off colour. I had to disconnect it for 30 mins, then re-connect, turn the ignition on, and then start after 5 mins. Could this be a similar story, as I have had to recently jump start my mx after a flat battery, and didn’t wait the 5 mins to fire him up. Clutching at straws maybe?
I have hit this a few times after a flat batt ,jump starting or replacing a dead batt, disconnect wait about 5-10 min’s and reconnect it should solve your problem, but your batt will need charging up off the mx/roadster or trickle charging while on and connected to the mx/roadster,i use an accumate trickle charger and i think i got it from mx5 parts???
That’s definitely something to try. Will give it a go tommorrow. Has worked in the past on other cars, but didn’t even think about the mx until earlier! Thanks a lot!
Ok, first off, sorry to dig up this old thread, but I wanted to give a quick update incase it was still an issue for anybody else out there… ok, so the problems seemed to be masked temporarily only by altering the timing, although I have no idea why… So there I am, taking off parts to clean, and decided to give the tb a good clean out… imagine my suprise to find an awfully large hole in the back of the intake pipe plastic casing, in the chamber area underneath the tb entry point, that was in the shape of the alternator pulley!! Any ideas on how this can have worn it’s way through? I haven’t replaced the parts yet to saee if it cures the idle issues, but I imagine it’s going to… I’m thinking that I will fibreglass the hole over to re-seal it, and then work on why it isn’t clearing the pulley to prevent future occurance… what a lucky find… I’d never have expected that…
