How are people tuning their NBs?

Perhaps worth mentioning that the first thing I did when I purchased was to fit a Sony Apple CarPlay stereo! Felt it was essential to the cockpit and vitally meant no need for sticking an iPhone to the windscreen or air vent. Fair to say I’m pretty impressed with how the 20 yr old speakers have held up too

I don’t see a problem swapping out a steering wheel air bag as long as it is done correct and safe.
I am just about to do a write up guide on how to do this on a MK2/2.5 which should be live on Menders forum in around 2 weeks.

Mazda did a pretty good job with these engines so didn’t leave much room to cost-effectively increase power without going to forced induction (FI). You can get more without FI but it’s very expensive and quite raucous.

You’ve hit the nail on the head with the Bofi turbo kit, which would be great on a road car, where around 200hp makes a massive improvement and still retains the character of an MX5, without putting too much strain on the rest of the car. Go on the track or go above 230hp with FI and things get exponentially more complicated and expensive as you need rods, 6 speed gearbox, better brakes ……

The suggestions for going faster by improving the chassis are very valid. Your 20 year old rubber suspension bushes need replacing as part of that.

Beware of adding “cold” air intakes that take air from near the exhaust manifold as that can’t be cold air. It might sound nicer though, as might various exhaust changes.

If you do go FI, expect to pay £4-6k, and consider whether that’s a worthwhile investment, because it won’t usually increase the value of the car if you sell, and will decrease the number of potential buyers. Cars with £4-6k spent on FI can sometimes be bought for £4k.
