I have two Mk2s, one has a lovely new mohair roof and one has a lovely new vinyl roof. I want to swap the mohair roof onto the other car. Will this be simple, ie just undoing a couple of bolts and swapping, or will it involve strange kite-building operations and need someone more dextrous than me?
Its a lot easier moving/fixing a hood attached to the frame so kite building operations unnecessary! I bit the bullet a few weeks ago and fitted a Mk2 mohair roof and frame to my Mk1 and it took about 4 hrs with some help from my dextrous teenage son. I found Rod’s manual invaluable but you can also find various fitting instructions on the web. There were two fiddly bits which you will have to do twice! First was dismantling/reassembling the doof pillar trim to get to the mounting bolts for the roof. Second was getting at the dozen or so bolts that attach the bottom edge of the roof/rain rail to the body. The latter is not particularly difficult…just awkward because you are crouched in a seriously uncomfortable position with the roof half open on your head! Some folk recommend removing the seats first to make life easier. Make absolutely sure the rain rail is correctly positioned otherwise you will suffer leaks. Good luck.
