How much would this rust cost to repair?

If you look on the MOT history, it stated that there was rust beginning to show in 2006 and then again in 2008 and it failed due to rust in 2013, so I suggest that was when it was done, however it is obviously ready for more work. The MOT history shows a vehicle that has not had a lot of love to be fair, so I would pass, especially at that price. There are better cars out there, this one will be a money pit (as many are, but there are better starting points)

Some need to wise up. Its a 30 year old car. It will have rust. Its a straight car; te bumper still bears its original Mazda decal. Budget for both arches and sills to be done (£7-800 without paint). There’s not really all that much going on in the MOT history. Never had an issue with the handbrake. Unusual.

Ultimately, as a relatively early UK, put back to standard spec, it will have more provenance than an import.

£2k with a MOT would be fair. I think it willneed welding to pass. If the seller is baulking at that, then its £1500 to trailer away, the price steadily decreasing every day it sits on his drive, if he has a drive.

At last a sensible comment. Some of these cars are getting on a bit now so as rightly said will have some rust. Some folk seem to expect a showroom condition car for next to nothing. There is nothing wrong with someone selling a car with some rust as long as it is priced accordingly. Many people consider these cars worth repairing rather than go for scrap like a ‘normal’ car would in similar condition.

Honestly, I would bail from this one. I’ve seen better out there on the market at that price and honestly those modifications are hideous. The thing that keeps an MX-5 even remotely valuable is that it’s rust free, everything else that’s mechanical tends to be quite cheap to fix so focus on getting a rust free car primarily.
