If you are handy and can do most of the work/maintenance on your cars that completely changes the equation. I too work on my own cars and I know that I have saved thousands throughout the years. Plus it is a very enjoyable experience, I like working with my hands.
I am lucky to have been able afford to call time on crawling around under cars much as I enjoyed it. Beyond doing the spark plugs I am happy to use the PSE method and luckily I have found Steve and Ali at MX-5 Restorations in Ikeston who are great fun to spend time with and have done countless thorough jobs on my lttle Madge .
I am currently at over 5k “invested” in my nbfl - on top of the purchase price (£1450). Thankfully my labour is free as I DIY it all, could easily double that if I had been paying someone to do it.
It’s more about extending the life of the car than the cost of doing so for me. Plus, everything I have changed should give me a good 5-10 years before parts need replacing. If the body needs more work in 15 years time I will see it as money well invested (especially if the value starts to rise like the Mk1’s). NB/NBFL’s are currently at the bottom of their price range, lots being scrapped due to rust so numbers will dwindle quickly, only the ones being saved will still be around in 10 years time.
Like everyone on here, I just hope that when I die, my wife doesnt sell the car and upgrades for the price I told her I paid for them. ![]()
NB sills and wings should be on the service schedule
I feel a bit better now on how much I have spent on my NC over the last 14 years after reading this thread ![]()
