- My model of MX-5 is: 1990 NA
- I’m based near: Chesterfield
- I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Front bumper restoration
Due to stone chips, it’s becoming increasingly likely that I’ll need to touch-up/respray my bumper. I’m also toying with the fact of making it period accurate for my car as it doesn’t seem to be a common sight amongst the NA owners I know.
My car is one of the very first UK-spec cars sold, so to my knowledge it would’ve had the OEM Mazda decal from factory. However, because she currently has a bumper from a donor car, a Eunos, she has the eternal flame badge instead.
I’ve had a look, and to take this badge off is simple enough, but will leave behind 2 holes. How do I go about filling them? And how much would it cost/take to do?
Total beginner here, no specialised tools specifically.
Well, sorry to sound obvious…I do not mean to…but if you are respraying anyhow just get the smallest amount off Amazon of cheap filler, insert a blob with toothpicks or a small screw driver, and sand it down using very fine emery. Even perhaps, nail file boards our of Tesco might do it…followed by smoothy paste to get nice prepaired surface.
This is what I was suggesting to my dad, who will be helping me with the respray.
If I use filler, which is the obvious option to the point even I thought of it, because the bumper is plastic, he reckons it will expand/shrink as the temperature of the year changes and crack the paint or possibly damage the bodywork itself.
How true is this?
Having built 14 cars on the very driveway this work will take place, I figured his advice has merit.
Never used it, try here…
