If cambelt fails

 What would happen if the cambelt snaped?. I know on some cars this is a bad thing as parts of the engine smash into each other. I’m drive a 1.6 Mk1. and it just crossed my mind thats all.

 

I surpose I’m asking if these engines have clearance with the piston at top of it travel whilst the inlet or exhaust valves are open.

These engines are non interference, so no damage occurs to the engine. Keep on top of belt changes though, you don’t want to be in an 85mph traffic jam on the M… when the belt snaps
