Hi Eric & welcome,

What can i say…Great cars, Great owners & Great events!

Plenty of knowledgeable guys/gals on here to guide you

Good time to be buying as there are plenty of bargains about at the moment. What model takes your fancy?

Happy New Year & happy 5 hunting [Y]

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

Good to know there is so much help out there.

Fancy (or rather have been told to go for) a 1.8 engine. Right?

Probably a good example of a Mk1 appeals most. Would like a hard top with it too if possible, and it must have air con and leather.

Regards

Eric

Sounds like you have talked yourself into V-Spec Import (Eunos Roadster) by the sound of it…Or similar. They have air con & leather seats etc.

Someone more knowledgeable will suggest other Limited Editions that fit your brief.

Same as mine but i have a 1.6…Very little to choose between the two engines in my opinion but others may say differant.

£2000 will buy you an imaculate one with a hardtop if you take your time looking. Dearer at a dealer obviously unless you get lucky.

Check out the usual places…Here, Ebay, Pistonheads, Autotrader, Gumtree & mx5nutz.

Good luck with the hunt

G’day mate, Welcome to the Forum

Hi  Welcome  It took me abt 20 years to get my 5 it is a black 1.8 icon on an 05 plate it is the best thing I have ever done, looking forward like yourself to getting to some of the meets(going to the special edition event at Beaulieu and the Scotland trip) maybe see u there, good luck in your hunt for a 5[:)]

Hi and welcome,

its a buyers market out there, look around test drive some but go for well cared and maintained car, it took me two months then one FELL on my lap… be aware one mans “mint example” is another mans “average” enjoy your search, buy, then the addiction sets in… “the MX god made me buy it”

Zippy [:#]

greetings eric

i think zippy has summed it up.

basically if it looks, drives & sounds good & providing the price is right, go for it.

my old Mk1 boneshaker has never let me down yet & returns enormous fun for the money.

welcome aboard and good look with your search

Hi All,

Many thanks to you all for the very watm welcome!

What a great bunch of people you are, especially considering I don’t even own a 5 yet.

Your hospitality and wealth of knowledge (been reading other threads on the forum) has made me even more confident in buying a 5, knowing that there will always be someone I can turn to on the site for advice and assistance.

The OC website is an invaluable resourse. Many congratulations to all those invloved in running and maintaining it! Thanks.

Hope to meet some of you soon at a regional meeting or event. I live in Wiltshire but regularly travel into the Midlands on business. I see there is a Midlands meeting this week but unfortunately I am unable to pop along to that one - maybe next month though!!

What tends to happen at the meetings? I guess each ‘Area’ as you call them, has a different format/agenda?

Regards

Eric

Hi Eric and welcome to the forum.

Only been a member for a short time myself but have to say that this is the best forum/website I have used in a long time.

Take time to check out the various sections in the forum. You will find them very informative.

As for “taking the plunge” I think the decision will become a no brainer for you soon. [;)]

Keep reading and asking the questions for now.

cheers for now, wayne

Hi,

 Wayne, thanks for the reply.

Can anyone answer this for me - I’ve been looking on ebay at the examples there currently, (getting a feel for prices and spec etc) and there seem to be quite a few auto gearbox MX5’s for sale. I’ve always been a manual gearbox man myself, having had an auto 5 series BMW and not liking it too much, but is there a general opinion about the MX5? For example, are there any commen issues associated with either the auto or the manual; which is nicer to drive etc?

Any guidance much appreciated!

Thanks.

Eric

Eric,

Manual everytime for me. It is a sports car after all. I dont think an auto does it justice.

The manual is close ratio which adds to the enjoyment of squirting along those B roads.

Auto is fine if just want to lumber along all the time.

Just my opinion

cheers Wayne

Well in my experience BMW auto boxes are pretty good (as good as an auto can be anyway)so if you didn’t like yours I’d definitely go for a manual MX5

Thanks for your replies Brendon & Wayne. Must say, I was hoping the manual would be the one to go for! I like driving and it puts a BIG smile on my face to ‘squirt’ along country lanes!! Great fun!

No doubt others will prefer autos, for various reasons, but I only asked the question because, as I’m sure you know, certain cars are best with either an auto or a manual - from the drivability point of view as well as the future resale value/saleability aspect.

But I’m SOOO pleased the manual is the one to go for!!  Can’t wait to drive one!

Eric

How’s the search going Eric? Have you been to see any yet?
Try and get one before the summer drivers start thinking “Ooh I’d love a convertible for the summer!”
If you do get one let us know and get some pics up!
