Indicator Fault mk1

Hi,

I have a MK1 Eunos Roadster and have a problem with right hand indicators. When indicating right there is a fast ticking but I have no light on dash and none of the indicator bulbs flash, the left indicators work fine. The same thing happens if I use hazard warning lights, left ok and no lights on the right.

I have checked all bulbs on right hand side and all ok and can’t find and obvious breaks in the wiring loom.

Can anyone give me any tips of next step to solving this one?

Any help would me much appreciated.

Paul

Are you sure there is no corrosion in the bulb holders? Last year I changed all the holders as mine were corroded.

Next thing I’d do is remove the flasher relay (feel around the relays under the dash with the indicator on to find the ticking relay), open it up and check for a dry solder joint. Or try a new flasher relay if you’re not handy with a soldering iron. You may find if you wiggle the wires going into the relay with it switched on it temporarily fixes it, that would confirm your diagnosis.

If you have a multimeter or a voltage test lamp, and can get access to the relay connections, then you can maybe save having to open up the relay by checking if the relay is putting out a voltage on that side.  If it is, then you can check the voltage at the bulb holder, and if there isn’t any then the wiring’s at fault between the two.  It’s unlikely (but not impossible) that the bulb holders are at fault if both your right hand lights aren’t working, more likely to be the relay or the connection from it to the lamps.

Electrics on older cars are usually very straightforward and it’s just a case of being methodical and chasing the circuit through logically, but for this you obviously need some way of testing for voltage at the different points along the path.  However, you can pick up very cheap multimeters (~£10) that are perfectly adequate for automotive use where great reading accuracy is not essential.  It’s always well worth having one in your toolkit and they aren’t that big.

Thanks for this really helped, I replaced indicator relay today and works fine, I am ready for some summer motoring now!!!

Great stuff, nice to hear a happy ending … and a relatively cheap one at that [:D]

Hi

Thanks for posting this as I had the same fault and was getting lots of “advice” which didn’t help. I suspected the relay was at fault but was too much of a skinflint to buy one without knowing it would work. After reading your post and the satisfactory resolution after fitting the new relay I went ahead and bought one too and lo and behold its working so I’m back on the road again as the problem was preventing me from MOTing the car.

Thanks again
