Installing H.I.D headlights to a mk1

Hi all,

I’m not sure if this has been done or can be done, but I wanted to improve the lighting from my mk1 eunos roadster. I use to have H.I.D 6000k’s on my old saxo, which worked a treat

Has anyone done this before?

Hi,

What have you got now? - the original Koito (? spelling) sealed units?

Cheapest option - buy a set of Wipac QuadOptics - about 100% better than old sealed units.

If you like spending £££, then look at Raybrigs - over-priced but effective.

I’m not sure what i’ve got at the moment… how would I tell if its a sealed unit? Oh and these Wipac QuadOptics, are they HIDS? Or something else?

 Hey adam,

Ive just got some halogen straight replacements for my mk1 eunos,  got them off of mx5parts at £21 +vat which i thought was reasonable good reviews off website what year is your 5? that all depends on if they have sealed beams or not. Mine is a 94 and has sealed beams thought id play it safe with just a straight upgraded switch on the unit, I did think about maybe placing the newer lense with interchangeable bulb but didnt think it would work and after i saw the halogen replacements i didnt bother. But the part number is S4694B off of www.mx5parts.co.uk Hope this helps

Yep have HId’s on mine , easy job but you need to watch the alignment

Just be aware that HID lights on most models, if not all, of MX5s are totally illegal. They will not meet the legislation requirements regarding self leveling and washing systems, so therefore should not be fitted, but hey it’s your choice[;)]

Look through the lens of the headlight - if you can’t see a bulb, you have sealed beam units.  These have poor performance.  You can simply replace them with units which take replaceable H4 halogen bulbs  That’s what Quadoptics and Raybriggs are.  You can fit them with uprated bulbs as well.

As Geoff says HIDs are illegal unless properly installed.  I think you’ll find that they are silly money as well.

Thanks for all your help guys! I’ll check to see if my lights are sealed when the misses comes back with the car!

I didn’t realise HIDs were illegal unless properly installed… so i’ll leave that idea then

Is it difficult to change the seal units?

No they are real easy just a straight replacement few scres and a couple of springs but it would be an idea to get them alligned after just to check, im fitting mine today (hopefully) along with a few other bits ill check them to see how they sit, if they are any different then i will report back later on today.

How handy  Yeah let me know how you get on.

Can you buy these from mx5 parts?

Yeah have a look at one of my previous posts it has the part number and price per unit on there so hope this helps.

Wipac Quad Optic suppliers:-

Autolink - £34 ex-vat (pair)

MX5parts - £21.48 ex-vat (each)

Plus P&P.

Fitting is easy - there a link somewhere - just take your time and don’t do it on a cold day!

You might not need to re-align. I didn’t need to on my last 2 sets…

Thanks again for all your help guys!

I’ll order these ASAP

Cheers

Adam

Hey adam, fitted with a squeeze, perfectly fine, all you have to do is undo the three screws around the housing bracket that is around the light and then change it over simple as. Total time for rear shocks, fan belt, and headlights just under 3 hours  saved a fortune from any garage…

Nice one! Sounds like a nice easy job

I’ll give this ago when i’ve got some spare cash

I got some halogen lights off ebay (clear lenses, but patterned reflector to give the proper beam pattern), I use them with decent phillips white +80% bulbs and my lights are now fantastic.

Nobody, but nobody, likes a smarty pants![:)][:)]

I’m just jealous!  On my third set of rear shocks I got it down to 45 mins each side.

Thanks for this link and topic. Looking at ordering the autolink halogens myself, but will double check what I have fitted at the moment…

Although, it you use their ebay shop (boundville) you’ll save a few pence… Some things are cheaper there than the main online shop for some reason… ConfusedRolling eyes
