This isn’t a request for help, as much as a list of what quotes I got in the hope that the next person who’s in my situation will find it useful! That said, please offer any comments or advice - it’s not too late for me yet!
So. As the subject says, I’m 27 years old, male and about to by my first MX-5. This will also be the first car that I’ve owned - for the last 3 years I’ve been driving my girlfriend’s Corsa around. I’ve had my license for 3 years as well, so I’m not a completely new driver, but I’m not that experienced and I don’t have a no claims bonus of my own, however I’ve never been in an accident (at least not in the driving seat!) which should help a bit!
I started off with the standard comparison websites, Confused and MoneySupermarket. I got a range of quotes from them, the best being £518 from Admiral. After jumping through the hoops, I got a call from an insurance broker who offered me £600, plus a 3 year NCB bonus at the end. I also tried Direct Line, who quoted £559 and either Aon or A-Plan (I forget which - sorry!) who passed me on to a broker who then passed me around about 4 or 5 companies, none of whom had my details, so I ended up dictating them over the phone about 5 times [:|] and getting quotes all well over £600. Also called the AA, who gave me a good laugh when they quoted £1500 to insure me.
Then someone suggested to me that I should be looking at multicar insurance and get mine and the girlfriend’s insurance from the same place. This was a bit more successful. Admiral’s website offered us insurance for £757 together, around £240 for her and £500 for me, but the really good news came when I called them up and said that I’d been driving on her insurance with no accidents for 3 years. I think I might’ve been lucky - she’s with Diamond, who are apparently a sister company of Admiral. This meant they could check I was on her policy and then offer to mirror 3 years of her 4 onto my policy, bringing it down to £391.
Given my previous quotes have been around the £550 to £600 level, I’m extremely happy with this and think this will probably be what I go for! (edit to add that this handily knocks around £100 off her insurance as well, so I think we’re both quite pleased!)
Excellent, sounds like you got a good deal, after a lot of legwork!
Mutli-car policies can be a good deal, but not always, so it is worth double checking them seperately, just to be sure.
Yeah, it looks to me like the multicar thing knocks around 10% off the premium, which at these sort of prices is well worth it! Admiral’s also a reasonably big name that I’ve heard of as well, so hopefully it’ll all go well!
Actually, hopefully I won’t need to speak to them again for a year!
It shows the value of the no claims bonus though, the 3 years knocked about £150 off it, about 30%. Actually, that’s less than I’d been led to believe, my random wanderings around the net suggested that 1 year was worth about 30%, 2 was 40%, 3 was 50% and 4 was 60%. Still, I’m not going to complain at this point!
I’m with Admiral multicar because when we had the RX8 and a KA it was a cracking deal. Before I linked the policies I was paying £490 for the RX and £260 for the KA, linking them gave a combined policy of £497, which was cheaper than many places wanted for the RX on its own.
With a Mazda 6 and a Fiesta it was less impressive but still good enough to stick with it, however it’s looking downright expensive with the 6 & the new MX5 so I’ll be shopping around again at renewal.
As with all insurance it’s usually a case of ‘new customers only’ and it pays to shop around, but the Admiral multicar is a good way to get a foot up on the ncb ladder.
