New owner of a Mazda MX-5 NC 2010
Can anyone suggest insurance for myself 55years old and my son 20years old as I have tried Peter James and they will not insure due to my son’s age.
Any help would be great full
Thanks Terry
Have you tried going on compare sites as opposed to going straight to brokers?
Thanks for the reply
Yes have tried compare sites and found that we got expensive quotes.
Was hoping that going to Peter James through the club would be better as they quote in the MX-5 Owners Club Insurance scheme “Insurance solutions for younger enthusiasts and family members.” But found that they would not do the insurance with my son aged 20 on our MX-5.
So looking for any ideas otherwise it is just me insuring the car or having to dig deep after just buying the car.
The insurance market is frustrating, Terry. Especially for those of us who, as parents, want to help our kids learn to drive carefully and responsibly. Sadly, we just have to accept that insurance for under 25’s is expensive these days.
I can share one small bit of good news, a little something to look forward to: Peter James were happy to add my son to my MX-5 insurance through the club scheme when he turned 25 this year, and it added very little to the costs.
Maybe try adrian flux they were cheap when i had my nissan gtir a few years ago, im not sure who else to try but I’ve had personal experience with Adrian flux
We’ve always shopped around at renewal time but stayed with Admiral for the past 5 years, on their multicar and home policy.
My 20yr old has his own policy on his car and when I looked to add him as a named driver on the mx-5, premium increased by just £70. But the excess jumped massively.
As mentioned above, try the comparison sites and a few direct as underwriting criteria seems to vary hugely across the industry.
My daughter as a new driver, never had insurance before went with Admiral. It was the best, lowest in price policy she could get at the time with me added as a named driver. She was well over 25 years of age at the time, still with them now.
I joined them for around 6 years as the quotes and subsequent renewals worked out ok. I’ve left them now and gone back to Aviva as the price just seem to rocket up on last year’s renewals, I had two cars and home insurance with them.
Whether that is any use to you who knows, insurance companies seem to have their own favourites they want to insure at times. My daughter seem happy with them but for me over 70 they don’t seem as keen to want my business. Btw I’ve had no accidents convictions etc ever, she’s had two claims in 4 years, go figure?
Thank you for all your responses, will look at some of those ideas!
Hi.
Whilst we can insure younger drivers generally the policy would need to be in the young driver’s name. We don’t normally cover younger drivers on their parents policy
Regards,
Dan.
Thanks for your response Dan. Ben does have his own insurance policy in his own name for his car, this is a second car for both him and me but would mainly be myself driving it as I am retired.
While it’s not the most convenient way to insure the car, have you tried VEYGO.
You would insure the car in your name then use VEYGO to insure for your son just for a few days at a time.
I insured my daughter on my NC1 2.0 sport , she was 19 and it cost about £10.00 a day. ( 2years ago)
Also if the worst happens it doesn’t affect your claims history.
I didn’t think of doing something like that, thank you, will look at that.
