Insuring an old MX5

Keep the Swift for a year or so, the insurance for the MX5 will go down by the time you are 21. Y0u know it makes sense.

Buy a car, SORN it and work on it over the next 12 months or so.

I’m guessing you’ve already tried insuring it on a classic policy with limited mileage? No claims isn’t needed for that.

Every policy will be 24/7 for a full year, unless you take out very short term insurance which is even more expensive. The risk of fire, theft or damage is there regardless of whether or not you’re driving.

Hello and welcome Cool    You can pick up a good mk1 for about £1000 or if you are lucky less (one went on ebay last week for £500 in Birmingham, that was a 1992 Eunos.  So get your self one and as the other poster said SORN it and work on it to get it to your liking.

I cannot think of many insurers taking someone as young on sadly.

Have you actually rung the usual suspects, such as REIS, Adrian Flux etc. They know the cars and will possibly offer more sensible options than the online guys.

Insurance is different for everyone, simply because we are all different so whatever anyone says they pay or whether they can or cannot get cover is in theory irrelevant to you.

Try calling for yourself, all the specialists. Insurance companies change what they will and won’t cover regularly. Specialist brokers who know the market well will go the extra mile to get you covered.
