Introducing myself and the Car

Hi Everyone.
Just joined the group, but have been motoring in the MX5 for many years.
We bought a 1994 Mk1 1.8iS in british racing green, way back in ~96 with 12K miles on the clock. At the time it was intended as a fun car for my wife as I had my bikes. However it soon turned into a workhorse and has been on the road commuting just about everyday since and has just clocked 97K miles. Luckily I was the one who had to drive it as my wife needed the family car. We’ve decided that we need a second 4 seater car but have also decided to keep the MX5 and just use it for pleasure driving. It’s funny how we have taken it for granted but thinking about it, very little has gone wrong. The gearbox syncro went just after purchase (warrenty job), we replaced the rear window with a heated glass item, two dead batteries, replacement raybrig lights for commuting on country lanes,  clutch master cylinder seals went last month, and just replaced the original radio which blew. Other than normal service items nothing else has gone wrong, which is more than can be said for the Fords I have owned in that time. It’s even got the original exhaust!

Now I know we are going to keep it I want to restore it to former glory. Well actually I have been checking her over and there isn’t that much to do. A wash a polish has shown the paint is great and the inside could be sorted with a valet. The only items I see to do are:-  new hood, some wires under the bonnet ( I think a multi earth connector) were eaten by mice I was driving around with (unknown to me) and the wires have oxidised to cooper green and seem very fragile, front anti roll bar (I think) looks very rusty, and a slight oil leak at the top of the engine at the back. I’ll do these once i’ve looked for advice in the appropriate forums. I think the only things i will let others do are:- wheel refurb as they are a bit scratched, some rust bubbling the paint on the rear sills just in front of the wheel arches. I’m hoping this can be a repair, not replacement of the entire rear wings. [:(]
I also want to start general maintanance such as brake dismantling and clean up and suspension refurb (it must be tired by now) , but please suggest anything I should look at.
I’ve been angling for a project bike for years but I think I’ve got something better. A project MX5!
Cheers
Phil

Welcome to the forum, glad to hear everything has gone well with the car, and hopefully will continue to do so

Good luck with the project - any problems I’m confident you will get a solution for here…

G’day mate, Welcome to the Forum

Welcome to the forum.
The oil leak sounds like the CAS O ring, theres details on it in the tech section somewhere. I have got to do mine yet, had the seal for about 6 months but not got round to it yet!

greetings

WelcomeSmile

I have a 1994 UK 1.8i S in Classic Red and love it, love it, love itSmile

I love the S version. Watching in the wing mirror as the electric aerial goes up when i put a CD in, those lovely electric mirrors(even though i never use them he he!!!), ABS which i quite like and then there’s the lovely MX-5 scuff plates too. Great car!

Cheers

Ben

If needed you can get replacement weld in repair panels for the rear wheels arch and false sill which I think is what you are describing.
