Just Thought as an Area Coordinator You Might Know Which Area Coordinator Covers Manchester?
It’s Usually in the back of the STHT Mag…But I Don’t Keep My Copies
And Couldn’t Work It Out from the Site
Then Maybe They Can Canvass Their Members to Better Assist the Poster ??
Thanks both I’m a member of the forum but can’t seem to access the Soft Top Hardtop mag. Do I have to pay full membership of £38 just to view who the area co-ordinator is? Sorry, correct me if I’ve misunderstood your comments above.
How will you know if another second hand car you buy is any better ? You may be lucky but the car you buy for £8K may be approaching the point where rust advisories will appear on the history at the next MoT.
If your MX-5 already has rust advisories that will appear on the MoT record and anybody with any sense will steer clear or price it in to any offer.
If it is any comfort, underside repairs are usually cheaper than painted body as the surface finish isn’t critical and the final coating is only underseal so no respray paint match. Suggest you search on the internet for a local MX5 expert, otherwise ask a local garage for a recommendation for a body repair shop and find out if it has been in business for a long time.
Pretty sure the OP could find a car for £8k that is less rusty than the present car, where a mechanic was afraid to prod the metal too much. Most mechanics are sufficiently experienced to tell the difference between surface rust and rot. What, an 8k car is a heartbeat away from being basically unsellable (“anybody with any sense will steer clear”)?
The prices on Autotrader will show what can be expected from a car without a major rust problem, if rust is found the seller would expect the punters to beat them down. If the cost of a proper, proper repair where they pull it all apart and re-weld is more than that price it is probably worth just running the car for the remainder of that MOT and then either a) selling it with a full heads-up that there is a rust issue and maybe someone will give you a ‘project price’ for it or b) it may be time to scrap it at the end of the MOT. I would not get emotional about the car, you would be better off saving the money and trading up to a newer one that is in really good order and without anything more than some surface rust underneath.
Two further points about ‘market conditions’ worth considering. We are about to go into a recession in this fair isle of ours and consumers are already cutting back. And autumn / winter are coming. The next few months are not going to be a time when people will be making fun discretionary purchases like convertible sports cars. Those that are, will - rightly - demand examples that are in excellent order and offering very good value.
