J6NGA's smoking problem

I wanted to respond to this earlier, however the thread is locked and I’m unable to.

@J6NGA - To help put your mind at ease, late last year I changed my thermostat after having the same issue with it sticking open and I can tell you that I had some similar concerns.

I had a bit of smoke, and quite a strong eggy smell (normally associated with a failing catalytic converter) and I was equally stressed out.

However, the advice you have been given is correct; if its been like that for years then the chances are ifs not been running as well it would otherwise.

My remedy was to buy a bottle of Forte (FORTE Specialist Petrol Specialist Injector Cleaner (400ml) Lower Emissions | eBay), put £20 of V-Power in it and spend a couple of hours giving it a really good thrashing over the North Yorkshire moors, basically redlining it the whole time between gears (I wasn’t terribly happy doing this, I don’t drive it hard usually and I felt like I was really hurting it).

However, it immediately sorted itself out… And with regards to other people’s comments about them loving a good beating, this is spot on advice - I cannot overstate the improvements I felt after a good long, really hard drive. After it had been driving around with a knackered thermostat for years it was clearly coked up and after this drive, it felt like a totally new car - it was like night and day.

My oil consumption also went down, it must have de-gunked the oil control rings too.

Give it a go and see how you get on.

**Absolutely do check the obvious things first though - custard in your oil filler cap/expansion tank and/or an obvious coolant loss as indicated by the level on the expansion tank.

Hi Chris,

Thank you for the time you have taken to write this. I appreciate your comments and I hope you are correct. I have taken it on an hours drive today but didn’t thrash it. When driving though I did not see any smoke only when I was stationary and I revved her up.

I am going to go back to the garage tomorrow and ask them to check it as on Friday I am booked in at Tony Banks for a new exhaust. I dont want to spend £500 on an exhaust if the car is broken.

However your post provides me with a bit of good hope and tonight I may sleep a little easier now.

Thank you.
