Just a hello

Got myself a Mazda MX5, and someone told me it would be handy to come onto something like this for hints and tips. So hello everyone! [:D]
I have a question, do i ask it here or go onto the main forum and ask?

Hi and welcome Karen… you have landed at the best place for info.

Ask away on here as they let noobies get away with it for a bit but have a look at the forum headings and post in those in the future.

Enjoy your 5

I thought you called me nobbie there [:P]

Okay, i have had it a few months, brilliant to drive etc, had an mgf before that, crap to drive, fortunately someone crashed into it whilst parked and it was written off [:D]  so when i got the cash i got the Mazda… Anyway, got up this morning, snow everywhere, and skidded all over the place… then i got stuck on a slight hill and wheels just kept spinning. I grabbed this poor unfortunate guy off the street to help me… soooooooo, my question is, what tyres should i get for this car…

Believe it or not, I have never had a problem with any other car getting stuck on a slight hill in the snow and ice…

Can you get winter tyres that have a good grip?

Karen

Snow is a barstuard to drive on in most cars, rear wheel drive is no different but needs subtle use of clutch and accelerator… snow tyres are a possible… but have a rear here, been discussed over the last few weeks.

See told you we were helpful…

Yes, you are helpful. And I know it’s a bastward lol to drive most cars in snow, but this was pathetic, it was only a slight hill… i watched my daughter driving past in her peugeot going to college, waving at me, with no problem what so ever [::(][;)] im like, bloody hell!!!

I found that link you posted, so the clutch control etc, i did, but to no avail… i mean if you saw this hill, its no even as big at the bump of the hunchbank of notre dams back… think ill change the tyres and try that…

You lot are all putting me to shame on this, I think ill start looking after my car and spruce it up a bit before i put a pic on [;)]

Thanks again.

The 5 is very light at the back… actually they are very light all round, good tread is important in snow, if your less than 4mm then forget snow driving. Try putting some weight in the boot and check your tyre pressures.

A puegeot is a very boring front wheel drive hack, far more fun trying to go up hill in a 5 my RX8 was just as crap in the snow so it’s not just you [;)] it’s all part of the fun of 5 ownership.

lol,. not when your trying to get to work. I live in East Kilbride in Scotland and work in Stirling which is an hours drive away. Didnt have the time to have fun…[:(]

But, hey thanks for your advice… I think the first one I will do is phone the council… get that gritter bin… there is one at one end of the street, but not the other…

Cheers

Here, they aint very good at welcoming you on this site are they lol

Apart from you of course!

[;)] They can be a bit slow, there is a Scottish area Club but I can’t find a link… someone might come along and let you know. Or drop another post on somewhere to ask.

Looking at the forecast you may be going slowly up the hill for the rest of the week.  BTW what 5 is it you have Mk1,2 or 3?

Just wanted to say a big hello Karen…

And

http://www.mx5scotland.co.uk/

G’day mate, Welcome to the Forum

Hi and welcome,

Have a look on the wheels/tyres section (http://mx5oc.co.uk/forum/forums/21.aspx) which may have more info. you need. From my past searching around on the old forum (which has recently been changed to this one you are looking at now, possibly losing some of the old threads however) the most trusted tyres on the MX-5 seem to be Goodyear Eagle F1s or Toyo Proxies T1S (or T1R which I think are the older equivalent). I have Proxies on mine are are great in the dry and wet (but not tried them in the snow). If you get some new ones remember they can take a little while to run-in and remove the manufacturers “gunk”. A full wheel alignment for £100 can also make a BIG difference to the handling (see Wheels In Motion http://www.wheels-inmotion.co.uk/ who is a big fan of the community and beware of your local tyre places who charge £25 and cannnot perform the full alignment like WIM can). Also, if your alloys are past their best anyway you can sometimes get a good deals on tyres and alloys together from your local supplier. I have these which were a good deal (I thought): http://www.topgear.co.uk/acatalog/4x_15_Inch_Dare_Evo_322_Black_Polished_Alloy_Wheels_with_tyres.php

Have fun!

Toffeeblock.

greetings from the sunny midlands.

i sometimes throw a sack of potatoes into the boot if i am going out in the snow, doesnt snow much here anyway but it helps.

my family comes from scotland so i know what its like sometimes up there.
