K & N Inductor - are they good?

I have heard so much about these, is it true after fitting them you do not need an air filter ever again?

I have a mk1 and they are £70 from mx 5 parts and have instructions how to fit.

What tools do you need to fit it?

They are good. You will need to re-oil them every 10,000 miles or so depending on conditions (i.e. lots of dust will clog it quicker). You will notice a bit more responsiveness and a lovely roar at about 4500rpm that make it seem quicker!

The kit is very simple to fit. A few sockets needed to remove the old air box and fit filter brackets. Good instructions included in the box from K&N.

One of the most popular mods. Make sure you tell your insurance company though!

I agree with Paul and Debbie. Great sound and some improvement at take-off.  My insurance company noted the fitting, but really weren’t interested as they said “no performance enhancement” and made no extra premium charge.  Dead easy to fit with good instructions.  1/2 hour

 Good Forum, guys. Thanks.

The BEST mod you can put on your car…to start with

personally i prefer the pipercross kit but its all down to taste really! the sound is nice but there is NO performance gains from them!

This was my first upgrade to my Mk1. Very simple to fit the filter itself but the pipe running from the scoop intake to the filter was a real hassle fouling on the AC assemblage.

Reading up on MX5parts reviews I assumed most owners did not have AC or had a different setup (my car was direct out of Japan) as it was rarely mentioned - in the end I got the local garage to re-route the pipe beyond the AC and up alongside the exhaust (I also had them fab and bolt on a mini heat shield to give the filter some additional breathing room from the exhaust).

A lot of hassle but the end result is worth it! - not experienced enough at driving/the car to estimate if it gives any significant additional BHP but the rasp and growl make me smile on every gear drop!

I was going to have a bid on this -

Phoned Direct Line and they wanted to load the premium by £50 so didn’t bother.

Hi

I bought myself a K&N Typhoon air filter and was really excited about getting it fitted. Took the advice from this thread to inform the insurance company only to be told that they would not insure me if I got it fitted!

Phoned the Aon number suggested on the Insurance Advice on this web-site and they quoted me a figure more than double that I am already paying.

Anybody know any decent, cheap insurance companies?

Cheers

Andy

I’m with Adrian Flux. They were very competative and allowed my mods.

They are worth a try and seem to know what they are talking about when you ring them, which is better than most!!

Darn, I’m with Direct Line too and was thinking about buying an Induction kit… :frowning:

Thats good!  Mine wanted to treble (£300 to £900 ) mine for having a role bar ,and thats definately not a performance improvement.

I have fitted the typhoon kit to my 2003 1.8 sport I have read it some where it will only give max 5-8 bhp extra, you should not have to change the filter but purchase the K&N cleaning oil. Sound good once fitted[:P]. You will need a good screw driver and I think 10mm combi spanner you should be able to fit in 20 mins[:D]

i have the K&N fitted i’m with admiral and it went up £30 so not to bad AON wouldn’t touch me as i’m under 25 so it’s all a case of shopping around really as whats good for one person may not be good for another. but having said that i love the sound the K&N gives me but as said above it really doesn’t give you any noticable power advantage as mazda really got the most out of the stock one!!

Now I have taken the car out of hibernation, and give it a good run round A roads and Motorway I am disapointed with the K&N Typhoon air kit, makes a nice tone, should have saved my money and bought a good exhaust something like a Larrini. I may take it off this week end

I Contacted Norwich Union or is it called Bruce Willis or Alice Cooper? NO Aviva
I am 54 and they told me if i fitted one they would cancel my insurance policy!!
Tough luck Bruce/Alice I will be changing my policy at renewal

Insurance companies are not very bright.  I mean how can an air filter that gives a noise and hardly any performance affect a the car.

I am changing my insurance at renewal from NIG to something else as they were rubbish in chasing a claim.  Result:- I ended up closing the claim after four months of waiting to hear.  Good job it only cost me £20 to repair.  Useless.
