Knocking from under the bonnet & over revving

Only noticed in the past few days but when i start her up and turn her off (the car!) i get about 3 or 4 ‘knocks’ from the engine.  I put a K&N on last week and it seems to be coming from that area.  Have looked under the bonnet whilst the wife started up and the car and for the life of me cant work out what is making the noise.

Also, upon start up idle is at 1300 but after a couple of mins driving it settles at the normal 850?

Any obvious ideas?

Thanks

Did the knocking start after you fitted the K&N? If so there’s the place to look, the engine sways an amazing amount at start up.
The idle stus is quite normal, it’s like running on a manual choke til the engine warms up a bit

is it a knock sound or more of a clatter when you first start it up? it could be noisy tappets (hydrolic lifters’), especially when the weather is cold. Try changing your oil to a fully synthetic oil which should help.  the revs are fine, its just the automatic choke kicking in to warm the engine up when its cold

Definte knock - about 3 or 4 times then nothing.  Did think that it could be the filter banging on something, but have held the filter whilst the car turned on and still knocks - hmmm?

Thanks guys re the revs - just realised it has only been doing it in this freezing weather.

If it knocks when you turn off, it’s not HLA clatter. Have a look at the exhaust manifold and joints, reach underneath when the engine is cold and grab the exhaust pipe and give it a good shake

If I remember correctly the sump is quite tight within the hole in the centre of the front subframe, so perhaps you have a worn engine mount that’s letting the engine move enough to make contact.

Is that serious/dangerous?

Solved!  It was the highly dangerous noise of - the metal pipe to the afm knocking against the power steering ‘thingy’!
