lack of power

i have a 1990 roadster and it has a problem with lack of accelaration in 1st 2nd and 3rd gear.my foot has to be to the floor to build up the power until 4th gear when it seems to kick back into life.
the problem seems intermitate to one journey will be fine the next no power again!!!
HELP any ideas …many thanks

Ok, so a few questions - what sort of revs are we talking about for the loss / restoring of power (acceleration)?
Better / worse on cold days?
How long since air filter was cleaned / replaced?
Any idle problems?
How does the exhaust gas look / smell - smoky, smells of petrol etc etc.

Bit more info needed I feel…

New plugs and leads maybe?—

ok tha answera to you reply are that the power is lost straight from pullaway and seems to return around the 2000rpm mark
it has only started having this problem over the last few days in the freezeing weather.
the air filter replaced in october.
no idle problems engine sounding fine.
the exhaust gas seems to be fine aswell no smoke or petrol smell
one last thing is seems to get better when engine is warm for example drove it home from work last night and it was bad, took it for a spine 2 hours later and not a single problem!!!
plugs and leads dont look that old either!

many thanks

rite… so let me get this…

from idle (800ish) to 2000 rpm at COLD… when u first start it until upto temp?

i think its just the cold weather tbh, the engine is under extreeeem conditions, u got condensation in the bores, u got flat out COLD going on, and the temp senders are tellin u its cold! the ECU is workin very hard to keep the engine running sweeet
the weather is a bit better now (rain… grrr lol )

how is she going now? any better?

mine seemed to be a bit sluggish at low RPM - but i blamed the cold, took it easy till she was warm, and its been great!

its running perfect now not a problem.i also put some redex fuel injection flush through it
