Hmm. Disgracefully unfit fifty-something attempts 25 mile bike commute. What could go wrong?
Despite being an owners club member for 20 plus years and a regular forum viewer this is my first topic! I would like to get members thoughts on yesterdays proposed Ulez expansion in London. I live only a mile inside the current outer Lez area and if the proposals go ahead it would be extended to include where I live. Sadly it would mean the end of my Mk1 ownership as they are not Ulez compliant despite the fact I only ever drive out of London! Whilst I accept that pollution does need to be addressed I will be very sad to end my ownership of mx5s. I am already trying to sell my 10 year old diesel for the same reason. Just wondered what the views of other owners in the same position. Thanks
As you say it will be ok to have your brand new Aston. I am local to Bromley so Bromley pageant will have to do without all the 80s vehicles like your fast Fords etc. The thought of no longer seeing a nice early Mk1 within the M25 just makes me sad.
Anyone know what the “My Dad was just a BusDriver” gets around in?
I can see this BS spreading like a fungal disease to Glasgow and Edinburgh in time but I’d not take any car into either frankly.
Which being retired is fine for me to say.
I realise that pollution is a problem, but when it comes to saving the Planet, the government and local Councils have Carte Blanche to do what they like and charge what they like, car drivers have become a cash cow for the government, and to add insult to injury, some of the roads in my district still have a huge amount of potholes that have been there for years.
I recently got hit with a £150 fine , reduced to £80 if I paid straight away , because once in a while, early on a Saturday morning ,I would travel down through Essex, and right across London, following the river from East to West London to see my sister in Surrey, stopping off at some of the places in London where I grew up, always enjoyed it, but didn’t realise they had started to include the congestion charge at weekends as well as the usual Monday to Friday, so didn’t even know I had to pay the fee, so two weeks later I was hit with this fine. OK so maybe its partly my fault , but that doesn’t stop me thinking what a load of money grabbing F**%£*$£ B***%"*%
As someone that used to drive to just outside London I never considered that I was in London till I was off the Hammersmith flyover.
I appears that all the towns around london must be included in the Dictator of Londons blatent money stealing efforts.
How about all owners of non compliant vehicles block the roads just outside the zone as a protest. !!!
After all the roads have become a dead end for them.
Are there turning bays so you can turn around away from the zone and huge park and ride car parks ???
I truly feel sorry for anyone that lives in the area.
The Mx5 owners club will never be able to hold a Rally at Brooklands ever again.
It already is a problem. I tried to deliver an electric car to London and her street was rammed with neighbour car which were just inside the zone blocking her street.
I am local to Bromley so Bromley pageant will have to do without all the 80s vehicles like your fast Fords etc.
Depends on the age, if they’re at least 40 years old they’re free in LEZ and ULEZ since they’re now Historic Vehicles.
So 2029 will see the first Historic MX-5
Hope you are right. However, I just tried a few number plates for some eBay classic mgs (over 40 years old) and the Ulez checker says they will have to pay the £12.50 daily charge. Maybe they will review the bands if and when the zone is expanded.
and the Ulez checker says they will have to pay the £12.50 daily charge.
I was tempted to mention that in my reply, since I already knew it incorrectly states exempt vehicles as requiring a daily charge, it does the check based on exhaust emissions, and disregards all other information.
It’s no doubt why they have the small disclaimer “check if a discount or exemption applies to your vehicle” (by logging in), but in any case:
Find out if you or your vehicle qualify for a grace period or exemption from the ULEZ charge. You may be eligible if you're claiming certain disability benefits, meet certain medical criteria or have a WAV, Community transport minibus or historic...
I supect that some of cars looked at have not been re registered as Historic.
It’s already being planned for Glasgow!
End result is I’ll no longer take my 5 into Glasgow or even go there - can never find anywhere to park and the parking charges are ridiculous and GCC has recently raised them again as well. I used to park up in High St car park for most of the week when I was getting the train down south for work - I’d be getting penalised for using that when the charge comes in, luckily that’s not something I do anymore.
I wonder if they are going to put some sort of restrictions on the M8, which after all passes close to the city center and west end?
Just going to lead to people not going into cities with these zones, city centers becoming ghost towns, and the money-grabbing councils getting even less money from parking fees and shops lower and lower footfalls as people use the out of town shopping centers more such as Braehead, etc.
when I put the reg of my (registered as historic) car in, it gives
You do not need to pay for any other charging zones
it used to state it would have to be payed. -
though I would have to pay central london congestion charge
No map proposed as such then…yet?
Sometimes I’m obliged to go to Old Dumbarton Road…not far from Partick Bridge…so Ill see if there is a dodge I can maybe do via Bearsden along Gt Western Rd…you know the dodges as well I expect.
Surprise surprise - it’s going to stop just at the boundary of the M8 as it passes through Glasgow - I suppose all the emissions on the M8 will know they’re not allowed to be blown over towards Glasgow city center - not smart cars but smart emissions
I travel from Helensburgh to Cumbernauld when in the office - I go via Duntocher, Bearsden, Kilsyth, etc, - it’s a few miles shorter than the M8 route but it’s also less congested and the road works on the M8 are likely to continue for years & years - so the dodge around them is going via the city center - GCC has this well planned out to infuriate and rob drivers no matter how you try to dodge it! insert multiple sweary words of your choice
There’s a map here, you can DL in higher definition on the link within it
https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=55545&p=0
Might be OK if you have a NA as it’ll be 30 yrs old - my NB “should” be ok by bending the definition - it’s no longer in production - touche GCC!
Oh there’s a new speed camera up on GWR just at the hospital before Anniesland cross - give us more of your money shouts GCC!
Well spotted Batman.

Much appreciated.
Hiya @db67,
I am in a similar position being on the Waltham Forest and Essex border. I have mk1 1992 that I would like to keep.
The expansion is under consultation so there may be a slim chance it will not go through. Also, I read that the coverage is up to the London Local Authority boundary inside the M25.
Plan ‘B’ would be to look at alternative vehicles…you either have to go pre 40-year rule (historical car as mentioned in this thread) or post-2005 for petrol cars.
This is the only map I could find that may be used to define the extended boundary.

How did you get caught out? Seems quite simple. EURO 4 petrol or EURO 5 diesel. Maybe I am missing something.
Basically a diesel with AdBlue will probably be Euro 5, some Diesel BMW and Audi, as early as 2011 are ULEZ compliant.
So most petrol cars after 2004 and most diesels after 2015. There was a ULEZ site where you entered your vehicles details and it told you.
