Hi I have a Mk1 early 90’s Eunos Roadster 1.8L. on the Hampshire/Wiltshire border.
In Mid November It had some trouble starting and I noticed that the Rev counter wasn’t responding and a new chemically smell. Then on a short jouney I felt a small lurch which caused me enough concern to make the next journey to a garage. During the jouney to the garage the car was lurching quite frequently, the rev counter would work but only during the lurching moments. The lurching felt like a loss of engine power as apposed to a clutch or brake issue.
At the garage I explained the problems, I metioned that I didn’t need the car daily had they could have time to spend but I didn’t have much money (propbably my 1st mistake). After an initial look over the car my Mechanic said the problem was most likely electrical, he was concerned that the ECU looked tampered with and was sure the Mass Air Flow meter was faulty. Knowing I had little money he allowed me to purchase a 2nd Hand AirFlow meter off Ebay. He fitted this but it did not fix the issue, then he sent the ECU off to be diagnosed, but it came back that the ECU was too hold to be diagnosed but the advice was to change the distributor.
So a month later I am shopping for a distributor but with no gurantee that this will solve the issue, my mechanic said the car is new enough to have electrical controls but not new enough for electrical diagnostics. Ideally he would like a working Model beside it so he can swap parts and see which bit needs replacing. I would like a working model too.
Questions.
Does anyone have a better idea as to what is causing this?
Does anyone know a more specialised garage in my area that could diagnose old Roadsters better?
Does anyone know where I can get a cheap working distributor?
My mechanical knowledge is very poor but I do have mechanical relatives if a bit of DIY was in order
