If you don’t use your dealer, they wont make any money…especially given the low margin on the depressed volume of new car sales…and soon they wont be there.

I do mine myself (2017 ND RF, 2.0 Sport Nav) so of course miss out on any routine firmware updates which a main dealer would do …… But the question is: do main dealers do routine firmware upgrades routinely? I have a 2019 6 and my wife has a 2020 3 and I am sure that the main dealer has done little, if anything, more than an oil change and charging an insulting sum to fill an already full washer bottle. I did ask them to upgrade the infotainment firmware on the 6 (did it myself on the MX-5) and they duly did that, but it was obvious that they only did it because I asked. I get a lot of pleasure from maintaining my MX-5 and I find that doing so sort of enhances the connection I have with it. I’ve learned a lot about the car too.
