Overall my initial impression is that it looks good although I’m not sure I can see me buying one in the future though. I like the roof off feeling and not having driven a Targa top before I’m not convinced that it will be the same?
I suspect Mazda are likely to win converts to this version. Perhaps people who wouldn’t previously considered an Mx? Its almost given the ND supercar looks, in my eye’s like a baby Aston, thats got to appeal.
Some of us currently driving a PRHT, hoping to swap up to a similar version of the ND, are going to be dissapointed. In a similar way that some MR2 drivers felt when the Mk3 soft top arrived?
I must say that I’d really LOVE to see a decent green, either solid or metallic, the car’s shape is screaming out for it!!! To me it’s reminiscent to the 50’s “Vanwall” = BRG anyone?
I imagine the open-top experience will be similar to the one I had in my Smart Roadster - not as open, not as blowy, but still open and much easier to not be closed…
Reminds me a bit of the original Datsun 240Z, or possibly the “Lenham” conversion for the MG Midget/Sprite from the 1960’s.
I am most interested in the statement about this having an automatic, exclusive to this model. I am restricted to autos due to disability and currently drive a Mk3.5 roadster Auto. Whilst I am not in the market for a new one, I am hoping that an automatic of some sort will be available in the UK at some point in time so that they eventually filter down to the secondhand market.
All academic to me - Can’t afford one. However, seems to me this is not an ideal touring car, if that lump is going into the boot - little space for luggage or an unusable boot rack. Going with the flow? I don’t think so. The Mazdaspeed version with a fixed top was a better idea, limited market, yes, but a more usable car from my POV. Most will disagree, but I accept that.
keep up Gerry, its the same as the NC, the boot space is not affected at all, the flat bit of the roof just folds in to the same space as the soft top. Now, a boot rack, that may well be a challenge…
I haven’t ever driven over 150 miles in one day in my MX5. So where’s the MX5 Hybrid/EV?
Otherwise, I think people getting hung up on colours and shapes is missing the point of this car. Most people think it’s a Jag or a Fiat. The MX5 was designed to replace/replicate two seater cars made in England many decades ago. It did that with the NA… then again with the NB… then again with all iterations of NCs… and the ND is supposed to blow me away? Visually, it doesn’t. Well then it must all be about the ‘sublime’ handling, right? I drove the 2.0Sport ND last year and wasn’t even close to impressed. Jittery and best suited to track days and tech mods. I suppose the nod to the 21st century would be the fixed touchy screen? Apart from that, it’s just another car and I hoped for so much more. So here ya go, gasp! a retracting roof!! Who would have thought that an MX…you get the picture.
