Mazda launch the NEW MX-5 RF

They have went to a whole lot of bother to make a glorified sun roof.

Ok! My second post on this forum…is this the usual standard?!

I’m in the “don’t like” camp on this one.

It looks great as a hard top, but the fact that the roof only partially folds down just doesn’t work for me.

As Paulo says, it’s a very complicated sunroof.

I placed my order earlier this week for a 2litre Sport Nav and have no regrets at all. Even if the RF was available today I would still have chosen the soft top.

I guess they can’t please everyone. I love the profile and general shape, but I think they could make it as a FHC, which would be simpler, lighter etc. As others have said, if the roof doesn’t fold completely away what’s the point? You might as well have a sunroof. Would I buy one? Possibly! They’ll definitely sell plenty as the uk love folding roofs and it’s a good looker.

We pick up our ND Sport Nav on Friday and also have no regrets…can’t wait

I do love it’s look with the roof up BUT - 1) Would it add a lot of weight?  2) Certainly because of its complexity it will have a lot more things to go wrong!  3) And what about hood/hoop rubbing?

Love the look of this car, my initial reaction was wow and I know at least one non mx5 owner who wants one too!

Where’s the waiting list?

ooops pressed submit twice

Whatever it may be called if it looks like that then it gets both thumbs up from me, looks like it’s flying when it’s stood still.

In relation to the car I am not convinced, but then I have never been one for the targa style. Whilst I like the roof up profile the roof down profile looks slightly “odd” - maybe the colour. Going against the general trend I think the ND fabric roof is far better than the RF.

Although in fairness I am keeping my NC for the foreseeable future and she does naff all miles at the moment as most of the bank holiday bar one day has been rain. I was planning to do my correction on her and get my Vintage on there but after doing the bm my knee has been severely painful. Next weekend should hopefully see me do it as not a lot needs to be done :).

As for the post quoted:

Diesel found out for what though? If you say particulates many cars with direct injection petrol engines that have brought about the increase in MPG release particulates into the air like a diesel. Hence the EU limiting petrols for particulates from Euro 6.

NOx is a different kettle of fish mind and is part of the reason for Adblue’s explosion in the European market among the light goods vehicles as well as heavy.

I’d buy a fastback version of the ND even if it weren’t retractable.

Oh my!

I’ve already got my soft-top in this colour, I’d like my hard-top in a dark metallic green with bronze coloured wheels please!

I do like the ND a lot, but the RF…

It is yes, on the left.

Side by side…Intakes, nose design below the badge, light shape, high bonnet front edge, bonnet, side-indicator & side grille shapes, alloys, quarter light, bodyline kick-up into the rear side window, flattened wheelarches, rear haunches…I know nothing’s identical and a lot of these features are common on lots of cars these days but…do the same with an NA and any of it’s contemporaries, or an NB or NC. Would you get so many similarities?

I’m not dissing the ND, but the RF version has just highlighted to me how…samey it is…and I’d not seen that before.

Now that does look more like an ND than that Fiat thing! Or are this and the RF another joint development, this time between Mazda and Toyota as they are soooo similar?

The GT-86 is a 2+2 coupe. Yes, it has a back seat. The front seats are roomy too. I think it is a significantly bigger car than the MX5. The lines are common to all sports coupes so I think Mazda has done a great job with the RF but the cars will look very different when viewed side by side in the real world.

yeah, the Lotus Elan that Mazda ripped off for the original NA design…

Possibly one of the least original designs ever…

I specifically used the word contemporaries for this very reason! And ‘possibly one of the least original designs ever…’ is very, very harsh, even from an NB fanboy like yourself. in light the general automotive efforts of the 90s and the entire Chinese motor industry. In design detail, the NA & Elan are further apart than the ND RF & GT86 anyway.

I’m quite aware that the GT86 is a bigger, different vehicle than the ND RF, didn’t say it wasn’t. But yes the lines are common to all sports coupes at the moment, including the GT86, and that’s a shame.
