Mazda launch the NEW MX-5 RF

 - I’d better have another look at that Honda Jazz brochure then.

Don’t knock it, it’s ultimately practical, comfortable, efficient and virtually bulletproof.  I’ve had one for 6 years.  And I have my ND for FUN!

Don’t knock it, it’s a great little car, ultimately practical, comfortable, efficient and virtually bulletproof.  I’ve had one for 6 years and NO problems.  And I have my ND for FUN!

No - sorry Countryboy - I didn’t mean to knock it. I have a great respect and affection for Honda and have owned 3, all completely trouble free. And I agree with you about the Jazz too - it’s just that the Jazz appeals (perfectly reasonably and not exclusively) to the ‘grey market’, of which I am most definitely one!

Me too!  My ND is my “old man’s fancy”, always wanted a 2 seater sports car and now, finally, I can justify having one!!??

I’m sat in the rest area tea-bar thing at my work and someone’s left at Autoexpress magazine on the coffee table. Nice surprise that it has the RF inside.

The magazine is saying the RF is due on sale in the UK in 2017 and will carry a premium of around £2,500 over the regular ND (Which I found was significantly more expensive than what I paid for my NC*). So prices for the RF should start around £21,000.

*If I remember correctly the NC started at £18,000 and the top of the range 2.0 SportTech with power retractable hard top was around £23,000

Looking forward to seeing it

Really like the look of this

I think they have been trying for a new niche with the ND anyway. Just look at some of the advertising, its not aimed at cream tea runners, but at a far more yooffull market it seems to me. Hence no glovebox, a sure sign they don’t want buyers who have to use several different pairs of spectacles, or need to have a box of tissues handy at all times…!

Oh dear I had better get rid of my new ND then at 69 I must be to old.

I believe the 25th Anniversary was £23,500, the Recaro Edition was £25,000 and the JOTA was £30,000 (since they’re all special editions, they don’t count)

…I’m holding out for a RF special edition… (Recaro’s please!)

I noticed that the Mazda MX-5 RF has been included in this year’s list of contenders for the Telegraph’s award category, against 10 others.
I believe that readers can vote for their favourite cars at- telegraph.co.uk/cars.

Galeso.

Nice but with it up it looses some of its “5” appeal to me. Prefer my soft top. Not up very much if I am out though and so fast up and down.

It’s neither a proper convertible, soft top, or a coupe, hardtop, it’s a slot-in-the-top, a dog’s dinner, and an expensive one at that!  Oh yes, and another set of problems to be found and sorted later!

In different colours, and in urban settings

I like the fastback concept and I like the design itself, but I do hope Mazda gets a little more creative with the colour options.

I looked at the launch photo’s featuring a dull grey car with a bored looking occupant and I wondered where the spark has gone?

Some of the finishes currently available on other makes would look stunning on a Mazda. I used to spray paint vehicles years ago so I do still tend to have an eye for a beautiful finish, and I find in particular Renault Flame Red to be amazingly good. In fact there are a range of Blues, Teals, and burnt oranges out there which would lend themselves perfectly to a sports car.

Renault flame red (above) may appear at first glance to be similar to Mazda soul red, but see it in the flesh (and especially on a sunny day) and you’ll see the difference.

Some lovely Blues…

A spicy Orange reminiscent of that used on the 2005 Icon but in a different league in terms of luminosity of paint finish.

Or how about a nice apple green a-la VW?  These are all bold colours and obviously won’t appeal to more conservative tastes, but enough of the dull greys eh Mazda?  Sports cars are supposed to make you smile!

The photos of the white and red RFs do flag up how fake the 3rd side window looks.

Having seen it in the flesh, its lovely

The latest news from Mazda Canada gives the RF a 120 pound weight increase over the ST.

Sorry I do not like this at all, I kid Mk3 Coupe owners in our Area they only have Half an Mx5.(An MX5 is a Soft Top) This RF is not even that. Mazda Should have made this a full Coupe with Perhaps a 2+2 Configuration and a sloping back Window. As an Extra Mazda could then offer a Tinted Glass roof panel
