The following is my own feeling and experience, if it is inappropriate to post on the forum, sorry please delete it
As some of you may know I recently bought a MK1 from Supercar classics, my MK1 Vspec
It came with new front disks and pads, also a full service. Also with 3 months warranty but these never include wearable item, even calipers which are not really wearable?!
I wasn’t expecting much from the ‘service’ as car dealer’s with sales service is usually just oil change
After 2 weeks ownership, there was a problem from my driver’s side rear brake. Caliper was seized and result in smoky hot wheels! (typical MX5 fragile brake!) luckily I wasn’t far from home that day and managed to drive home
Emailed supercar classics about the problem, they told me to bring the car to a garage, and let the garage phone them and will sort it out. At first I wondered what the ‘sort it out’ is, I should have gone back to their workshop but due to distance (Cardiff and Liverpool) I won’t be able to make it. Next day I went to local garage, they freed up my seized caliper as they said it is still in good nick, they contacted Supercar classics through the phone and the £50 bill was paid directly through the phone, it means no charge to me! My local garage was friendly as well (John Dolbear) they said if the caliper seizes up in the next month or two they will replace the caliper for me without charging me labour cost
Few weeks ago (about 1 month ownership) I had a quick visual brake check myself, i realised one of the front pad wasn’t fitted correctly (too far off the centre) and result in 1/3 of the pad not touching the disk. It is a very easy fix and I am confident to do it myself. It is clearly the workshop’s fault as new front disks and pads just fitted… so I contacted Supercarclassics again and see if they are happy to let me do it myself, and if new pads are needed see if they will be responsible for that. Maybe they didn’t really trust my judgement, which is understandable, they asked me to bring the car to garage again. Then the problem is just as I thought, pads fitted incorrectly, no new pads needed, just to refit and costed £30 for the job. Once again it was paid through the phone by them
Last Thursday (about 1.5 months ownership) my driver side rear caliper seized up again… this time I visited my local garage without contacting supercar classics. I feel sorry to claim money off supercar classics again as they have been so kind keep paying for the jobs, although at some point they should be responsible for that, it is still not entirely their fault. I left the number of supercar classics to the garage and see if anything can be sorted by them, wasn’t expecting to have a free caliper but it was the same seized problem, so if they had been responsible for the first job they should probably be responsible for this one as well.
Next morning I get the car back (I was busy that afternoon), again no money needed from me
I am very very impressed by how responsible they are. I had similar problems from my girlfriend’s Citroen C2 bought from A Nissan dealer (not brakes but suspension), and I needed to be furious to them and asking for advice from trading standards! They then still only paid us the first bill! I am not trying to show off my ‘money claiming’ skill, as I really didn’t want to claim any money off them. I wish my car had no problem at all. I am also not suggesting anyone who bought from Supercar classics to claim money off them if anything goes wrong in the car
This is only a story I would like to share. I think sending them email to say thank you for sorting out the problems on my car just isn’t useful, it is nice but not useful. I post this up here might be helpful to them on their specialist image. I hope no one will try to take advantage from them because of seeing this post, they are just nice but it doesn’t mean they are stupid to pay for your faults.
If anyone ask me if supercar classics is good, I will not hesitate to recommand them
If I need another MX5 or any other car from them, I will not be in doubt how good this dealer is
I hope this little story will help anyone looking for a MX5
