Mechanic required

Hi,

My lovely MX5 (08) has been off the road for a while as the engine died (technical term I know) and I’m now searching for someone to help me get her back on track.

I’m based in Maidenhead in Berkshire and really want someone honest who will advise me, do a good job - and just as important, will not rip me off as I dont know very much about mechanics!

Could anyone on this forum point me in the right direction i.e. be able to help, or suggest someone they know and trust to help me

Thank you

Janie

You might be best trying Maztek in Slough, a Mazda and MX5 specialist. Never used them myself but I’ve known people who have who have been happy enough.

Thank you for your reply - sounds like a good place to start.

Give us a bit more information, the technical term ‘engine died’ doesn’t really help.

Could it be something as simple as a flat battery or as serious as a seized engine?

There are some very knowledgeable people on this site who will go out of their way to help you…more info please.

Agreed, maybe its worth explaining a little bit more and you might get some free advice?

I am in Reading and happy to take a quick look and give you the benefit of my experience of these cars and advice where possible for you if you get in touch. Message me if you would like

Sadly I think Maztek has now closed for good.
As said above, clarification of your problem would help.
I’m in Maidenhead as well and have an OBD reader and some knowledge of these cars if I can help but I’m afraid I’m off for a couple of weeks on Wednesday.
PM me if I can help.
Dave

I didn’t know Maztek had closed, that’s a shame.

Thank you so much for the replies, I’m most grateful and will PM those of you who have offered.  Apologies for the lack of mechanical knowledge, nobody has yet looked at the car for me so I dont know exactly what is wrong.

Thank you again for taking the time to reply

Any update on this ???

There’s Littlewick Green Service Station just outside Maidenhead on the A4 going toward Reading - they sell Subaru’s and Suzuki’s but are a Honda and Mazda service point too.

I’ve not taken my MX there yet but they did a great job of keeping my old Nissan Maxima and Honda Accord coupe (both with V6 engines) going a few years ago.

I intend to have my MK2.5 and the other half’s MK3 serviced there in future.

I agree, Littlewick Green Service Station is very good. I bought my silver mk2 from them years ago and a Suziuki Vitara a few years back. Nice people and very helpful.
BUT, you are paying main dealer prices. We had the Suzuki serviced there for the first three years because of the warranty. Excellent service but not cheap.

Looks like the OP dosn’t need our help any more.
Given the replies and help offered, it would have been nice to get some sort of feedback but maybe I’m just being old fashioned.
Hey ho.

Hi everyone,

Thank you for your messages, I am still after help however I have been away so I have not been in a position to check emails and to reply over the last three days.

I used to take my MX5 to Littlewick a while ago for service, however I too expect they may be expensive.

I am back home in a few days and will be in touch with those of you who have offered help

Thanks again

I suspect your problem may be the all too common crank issue that will require a replacment engine.

These engines are particularly sensitive to oil starvation and too many have failed when oil not kept at the top of the dipstick range. Add the fact that the original dipstick has been found to be hard to read by many owners and it’s a recipe for disaster.

Make absolutely sure that the engine is the problem as others have found that auxiliary belt pulley failure has given exactly the same symptons/noises as a failed engine. Pulley is easily checked for play to discount this as a possible cheap to cure solution.

Engine replacement and fitting likely to cost £2000 - 2500.

Thanks for updating us.
As above I’m in Maidenhead so pm me if I can help.
Dave

Are you mixing this up with another post?

so far we have no details of the problem, unless I’ve missed something.

Yet again we are left wondering what happened.
It pisses me off when people ask for help, they are then offered help and advice and then nothing.
In this case double so, as two members offered to come to the OPs location to help.
Likewise if someone has helped you please remember the “thank” button.
Sorry, having a Victor Meldrew moment.
Deep breath, and chill.
D

Dear Victor Meldrew, yes I expect you do need to chill a little, please don’t be pi**ed off with me!   Apologies, I really didn’t realise I was expected to update everybody however as you asked so nicely … ;)

My Maisie the Mazda does seem to need a new engine, and the brakes have seized.  I think rhino666 got it right! To add insult to injury, she also has a dent/scratch on the bodywork.

Hi

Could someone please explain why the end of my post has been ‘edited’  (deleted) by ‘Admin’ ?

Thank you
