Mk 1 Wooden Steering Wheel - sanding and staining

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __
  2. I’m based near: __
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on:

I need to sand the wooden steering wheel on my Mk1, the lacquer on the top of the steering wheel has bubbled up, i presume due to sunlight. Any advice on a decent lacquer/woodstain to use (which is not effected by sunlight). I checked an older post which -although probably produced an excellent end product- was far too involving for me. Just want to sand it and stain/lacquer it to a decent standard. Also is there a specific colour I am looking for a Mk1 Eunos Roadstar?

Many thanks

Modassar.

If it needs to survive sun and rain, then best is properly applied Yacht Varnish, in lots of coats. That includes the prep etc and making sure the wood is really, really dry, even cooked for a while (ie kiln dried) at about 80C if possible to drive out any hint of moisture.

It is usually the moisture causing the bubbling on exterior wood. The sun mostly makes wood varnish flake, yellow or go milky, depending on type and how it was applied.

Thanks for the great advice Richard! Very usefull
