I’m replacing the carpets of my 1992 Eunos Roadster, I have the complete new cabin carpet set including felt underlay and adhesive all supplied by Newton Commercial. The kit comes with very comprehensive instructions and photos, which is nice, what I want to know is how long should this take me (on my own).
The things that come to those who wait will be the things left by those that got there first.
Thanks for the feedback, I need to schedule where/when I will tackle this job.
The carpet set is designed to be installed without the need to remove the dashboard (it says in the instructions) however they do say to cut the old carpet to get it out. Two days to do the job means an indoor task. I like that idea, it can air the cabin between the swap out.
The old red carpets are faded and worn, they probably smell too but as I mostly drive with the hood down I don’t know if there actually is an odour. I will save the old carpets to use as a template just in case I don’t like the refurbished look/feel.
Has anybody used Newton Commercial to recover their high back leather seats? My Mk1 is a limited edition (1,000) and has red cabin interior, the seats have speakers in the headrest and a base speaker in the seat.
If you dont need to remove the dash you could do it in a day really, no real need to air anything just give it all a good clean underneath.
You may find some rust underneath which you could deal with easily.
Worth checking the Ecu isnt corroded too if its been damp in there.
The last carpet set I dealt with from Newton Commercial (not for an MX-5 admittedly) required quite a lot of cutting to size to get it to fit as it was too big, also I found changing the order of the steps their instructions gave led to better results so definitely do a dry run, glue-less fitting first.
I haven’t, but if I were to get such work done then I would use them as even when there have been issues with orders their customer service has been quick to get things sorted (on one occasion they sent the wrong material).
They’ve also been kind enough to send me material for free (incl. postage) in the past and it’s not like their fabrics are cheap to buy in the first place.
Watch out for a Yen coin underneath pax side, some sort of good luck or blessing back in the day. I’ve no Mk1 any more…but I kept the coin. Only bit that did not rust! I’m going to make an acetate paper weight of it…some day.
It only took me a few hours to change the carpet. The old one was going in the bin. It was the later felt type used from 1995 only. I wasn’t too precious getting it out; Trusty Leatherman did the hacking , and most of the carpet came out. There are probably scraps of the original still there under the dash. I don 't care; extra insulation. The replacement was a used early carpet that someone had removed properly. I cut a bit out that would normally fit under the dash, and just tucked it up. Done 3 carpet replacements like this. You can’t tell.
Thanks for all the advice, it really helps. I’ve got a handle on what’s involved now and just need to get organised. Really appreciate directing me to Martrim for the red vinyl, mine is sun faded and will be replaced, now I know where to get the material, big thanks ast.
