Mk1 Smoking when cold

Since the last service I had done on my MK1 the car has developed an on off habit of heavy smoking when cold. It doesn’t always do this but when it does there is a huge cloud of blue/grey smoke following me down the road for a few minutes till the engine warms up fully. I am hoping this problem isn’t going to be too much of a pain to fix but would welcome any comments on what might be causing it. Any and all ideas would be useful

If you don’t use the car very often it could be condensation - especially in cold weather.

Definately not the cause, I use the car pretty much everyday

Mine has been doing this in this recent freezing weather.  It revs high too (1300) for a couple of minutes.  Then it settles and the smoke stops.  I know (after asking on here) that the revs are the auto choke, so assume the extra smoke just goes with it.

Highlander You say you have just had the car serviced just check its not been overfilled,on earlier cars (not Mazda) it has been known for too much oil to fill the cam wells and just on start up pull a small amount of engine oil down the valve guides, but it could be the auto choke working and in the cold weather it looks blue,(burning oil) but as it goes away when warm, just keep an eye on the oil level, I have not heard of Mazda engines being oil burners

Thanks for that, will keep an eye on it

 Hi Highlander,

Did you ever solve the problem with your car smoking?

Mines doing exactly the same!!!

Was told it was valve stem oil seals so replaced them but still doing the same.

Just wondered if you ever cured it?

Thanks Mike
