I’m plan buy another MX-5 , and I’m still hesitating between a MK1 and a MK2.5 . Both of them have less than 19.000 miles at clock. Do I take some risks from a corrosion point of view with the mML2.5, or is it still time to save her with a chassis treatment?
The only way to tell is to have a full inspection underneath, under the front covers, in the arches around the panel joins, seatbelt tower area. There are good ones and really scary ones, not really possible to tell sometimes without getting down and dirty
Depending on your browser you can get a fix to view the broken Photobucket pictures. I use one for Chrome and Firefox, just do a search something like “fix Photobucket pictures in Chrome” etc etc.
Great shout! This is going to make my general life easier, not just MX5 Forum. I assumed these images were gone unless the person that uploaded them fixed it.
Back to the topic, my job in the next few months is to have a good check of my 2005 model. It’s been fine while I’ve had it but I think the outer rust was covered up a bit as it looks a lot worse now than it was a couple of months ago. I’m thinking of getting under the car and taking a load of photos. I haven’t had a proper look since I bought the car last year.
I bought my June 1999 registered MX5 (Mark 2) in October 2017 and I have recently been looking through old posts on the forum. I have just spent a few days cleaning off 20 years of crud, muck and rust from the front and rear suspension and generally checking things over in these areas and apart from a degree of corrosion of the steel suspension arms, everything looks OK. I have treated the rust with a rust inhibitor in order to slow down the corrosion process.
After reading the above article on chassis legs, I removed the plastic ‘under-engine’ tray as suggested (8 bolts to remove) and my chassis rails look very solid so I am somewhat relieved.
Did an article on chassis rails ever appear in HardTop SoftTop and if so, what was the year and volume and issue number?
