Mk3 1.8 remap

That’s interesting. I’ll certainly try a tank of E10. Do you feel any difference in power between the two fuel types?

Btw - bloody love your car. I’ve seen photos of it in your various posts. Looks superb and must drive brilliantly with 180bhp. Very jealous!

Thank you for your comments about the car👍

Edit… getting my fuels mixed up, I meant I changed from E10 to E5 the super unleaded, posts above now corrected. It’s an age thing.

Regards any noticeable power increase using the two fuels I’d guess not really.
When first using E5 I ran the whole tank down of E10 (Asda’s finest) to use Sainsbury’s super unleaded and it was pretty clear the car idled better straight off. Before it definitely was sounding a little rough, uneven running.
I never had the remap done it was already on the car when I bought it, so can’t compare a before and after.

All good info… Did they not recommend having the exhaust fitted before the remap? I would have thought an after market sports exhaust would hopefully give better flow?

It depends what fuel was in when the remap was done, providing it was done properly on a rollong road. Mine was mapped on super and now it needs it, but that allowed more power.
If you fit and exhaust and induction kit the map needs redoing. This is not that expensive as you have already paid the licence fee.

Hi. Mine was a generic map so not a specific map for my car. If I had been changing the manifold I’d definitely have gone for a custom map though.

From what I’ve read, and accepting I might be wrong, the NC manifold and cat are the main restriction in the exhaust. So I’m guessing changing the rest of the exhaust probably won’t have opened it up very much. I certainly haven’t noticed any difference in performance, but then maybe a custom map might have exploited the new exhaust?

The decision to change the exhaust though was to give it a bit more of a characterful sound. It’s achieved that but I keep doubting myself as to whether I like it or not. Depends what mood I’m in I think :joy:.

I have the same NC (even down to the colour!). Also considering a remap.

Just interested if you had the cat removed as this was recommended by the MX-5 specialist near me.

Anyone else had there 1.8 remapped ? Can’t decide if it’s worth it even with realistic expectations.

Last year I had my NC1 1.8 remaped with a VersaTuner ECU tune. It was done by an MX-5 specialist ( MX5onderhoud.nl)in the Netherlands. They tweaked a template Versatune map until they think it’s perfect. They don’t sell numbers but say you can expect around +10hp and +15Nm. It’s not a huge increase but certainly notacible. The car runs and revs more smoothly and ‘feels’ a bit more enthousiastic. At a price of € 450 I am realy pleased with this tune.

Thanks - that sounds good and what I’d hope for..

I had mine done too. Mainly to get rid of the awful flat spot on moving off. gains arteas stated. Iam also now achieving 44mpg on a run so I for one am happy.

When you say flat spot do you mean that bit where it suddenly loses revs making it difficult to pull away smoothly ?!

Who did the remap for you ?

It was a few years ago but I think it was Torx Tuning. He came to my house and did it on the drive.

Exactly that

Brill thanks - could be worth doing it for that alone !
