I bought a Mk3 Icon last Saturday and picked it up yesterday. It’s a 2008 on a 57 plate, and is just over a year old. It is quite high milage considering it’s age (27,000). Given this is the case I assume that it should have had 2 services already (the car supermarket I got it from gave it their own as part of their normal service). When I was buying the car there was no stamps or print outs to indicate any previous services and they didn’t have anything on record themselves. So I suppose I was taking a bit of gamble that it had been serviced as it should have been.
So with that in mind, I have a couple of questions. If (and I hope this isn’t the case) it hasn’t had any services prior to the one it just had would Mazda invalidate my warranty if something went wrong on it? Also, if I take the car to my local dealer, will they be able to do a quick check on the car and see if it’s been serviced before? I’m going to ring my local dealer shortly and find out. I’m hoping everything is ok.
As for me … I have been a member of the OC since March last year when my wife and I had a Mk2.5 Phoenix, unfortunately I had a crash in it a few months later which ended up being a write off. We went off sports cars a little at that point, but after getting over the accident we decided we missed MX5’s too much.
With regard to the service history, any mazda authorised dealer/repair centre should be able to give you an indication of dates of services etc using ECHO (mazdas digital service)
If you have trouble getting the info, drop me a PM with the reg and i will look it up tomorrow for you when I am at my clients (a mazda dealer)
The main issue you will have is the fact the car supermarket wont have access to ECHO so therefore their service wont be showing now and in the future, also the car needs to have an annual paint and corrosion check for the warranty on these, I would suggest you get it along to a dealer to cover yourself for that,
Thanks Rob, that’s a very kind offer. I’m still doing a little detective work. So far my local Mazda dealer reckons they have no record of it on the Mazda website. They say it doesn’t mean it hasn’t been serviced, but obviously they have no record of it. I have also spoken to the dealer in Kendal where it was originally sold and they only have a record of it’s initial PDI check before it was given to the first owner.
However! I have found a receipt in the little compartment in the boot for the tools which looks like it has the name and phone number of the previous owner. I hope it is, because he will obviously know if it’s been done or not.
I’ll email those details to you anyway Rob, you never know you may be able to find something, and thanks again.
As for my local Mazda dealer (Autohaus Northampton). The guy I spoke to in the service dept said that it would look much better for any warranty issues I may have, if I come to them and have a full service done as soon as possible (£190 is what they will charge).
I’m tempted just from the point of view of getting the car checked over by people who I assume know what they’re doing.
Slight update, I have spoken to the original owner (well he leased the car for a year) and he said that it had done nearly all motorway miles during its first year and that it had been serviced at 15,000 miles after 8 months. I am going to try and get in touch with the garage that did the service to get an official record of it.
I’m still going to go ahead and have the combination service at my local Mazda who said they would also give me a discount for being a member of the owners club.
