Mk4 / ND Gearbox problems

Will do, its more often than not stiff enaging 1st, always has been, if a replacement gets approved i will be insisting on a v4 box

'I know of one ND owner who reported intermittent difficulty engaging 2nd and although the dealer couldn’t replicate the fault a replacement gearbox was authorised by Mazda UK.

Mine is going in next week for diagnostic.  I drove it this morning with the roof up (usually drive it with the roof down) and I could hear the whine under acceleration again, also got a nice awkward crunch into 2nd.

Gearbox oil was replaced just 2,000 miles ago as Pentraeth’s cure to the whine but clearly it has made no difference (not surprised)

Mine is now 3 years old with 25K miles on it. It has always whined under acceleration and doesn’t seem to have got any worse during my ownership, however I have extended the warranty just in case.

Were you able to choose which version of the extended warranty you wanted? Last time I looked only the full bifta option would allow selections and not the essentials one.

A whining gearbox isn’t normal, a number of NDs in the states have had the gearbox replaced for whining alone.

It was only about 30 quid difference between the basic one and the full monty one so I went for the full one.

Checked again and still only the option of ‘complete‘ cover available to me   Think I’ll look at some other options as I don’t believe that’s VFM.

i have a 2018 (Registered April) ND 2.0 Sport Nav and from new i have always found the gearbox not as smooth as expected, especially in the lower gears.

I would assume i have the latest box but still find the change notchy.

When i collected the car from the dealer one of the first comments he made was that i need to fully depress the clutch to change gear, which i found rather odd. The car has still only covered 2800 miles and i was hoping it would improve as it “run in” but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

What is the gearbox serial number? Look down to it by the bulkhead and there should be a label at the top of the housing. capture all the info and share. Just because it was registered April 18 doesn’t mean its not been sat somewhere for some time. Mine was a 17 plate but the gearbox was Mar 16. I’ve since had it replaced.

I had to postpone my visit so its not happening until this Friday.

My dealer couldn’t replicate any of my issues on the 5 minute / 4 mile test drive and seemingly didn’t want to acknowledge any known issue with the gearbox.  I’ve asked them to contact Mazda UK and I’ve done so myself also.

Interesting that Car 100 the Mazda MK4 the LHD Global Cup Car had to be towed in after 105 laps at the Race of Rememberance on the Anglesey Circuit this weekend with transmission failure. Another one for the MK4 gearbox failure list? I will confirm when I have any more details

A bit of…DAVID & GOLIATH…

our Mazda race car built in Sheffield lol finished the race in 5th position overall but more importantly 1st in class by some 20+ laps over P2

the VERY expensive global cup car as Burt said above failed to finish with gearbox issues.

Think the ‘Global Cup’ must be similar to the baseball ‘World Series’ that doesn’t exactly embrace a great deal of the world.

Maybe if they had expanded their sourcing to include some Sheffield steel gearbox components they might not have had such an ignominious end to the race.

20+ laps is a pretty impressive margin. Could have done a call out to a broken down ambulance half way through and still got the class win.

Thanks for your comments Paul (Roadie) I have opened another post under the motorsport section of the forum for comments about the Race of Remembrance, as I want this post to be specifically for Mk4 gearbox problems.

Has it been established whether this is an issue affecting the 2.0 units only??? I have the 1.5 and am experiencing intermittent issues engaging 1st and an occasional crunch into 2nd. Reported it to the dealer today and they said they were unaware of any issues with the 1.5 gearboxes.

1.5’s are known to be affected though to a much lesser extent, how many miles now?

It’s the same gearbox in both 1.5 & 2.0 so I don’t see why the 1.5 should be immune.

One might reasonably think that any weakness is more likely to manifest in the higher torque car, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be any.  Maybe it’s the shock loads that find the weakness, rather than the normal in-gear loading.

Just ticked over 37k :-/ warranty till march
