We’ll have to agree to disagree here. I find it far easier to touch a screen which is inline with my windscreen than have to take one hand off the wheel for a large amount of time, contort my arm and try and co-ordinate that controller with what’s happening on the screen. I find myself looking at the screen for longer as i attempt to move the cursor around the screen, all of which could be done in most cases by a couple of touches. Or i do what i normally do, start off on a station and then just leave it or mute it because i can’t be bothered fiddling, that or just play a playlist off the phone. 

Changing a favourite on the DAB for example; i can either scroll through using the steering wheel controls while looking every time to see which one i’m on, or move the controller over to click on the star/have to look down to find the star button, then i have to scroll down with the wheel to find the one i want all the time looking at the screen. This is normally done in a few stages. Or i could reach over, touch the star and then the one i want which would take a matter of a couple of seconds.  

 

You have the same number of menu moves whether you are jabbing at an icon on the touch sensitive screen (Which invariably doesn’t respond) or use the control wheel.

it is far more dangerous to try and stab a touch sensitive icon, that is a greater reach away, whilst the car is jigging around, then having a secure hold in the control wheel. Selecting a radio favourite station is 2 simple moves - push the “star” button on the control panel ('cos I’m clever I know where it is so I don’t have to look down) and jiggle the wheel up or down (which you will need to do anyway if you have a long list). Personally I find it easier to select the station I want before I set off - I rarely change it. Or if I am feeling lazy I use the voice control. Simples

“Electronic hand brake: Not only are you handing over an important safety system to a computer but if the battery goes flat you can’t even push the car out of the way.”

The Peaks and Pennines group visited the Highways Dept. control room a couple of weeks ago.

The manager who showed us around mentioned that electronic handbrakes cause them a lot of trouble in the event of them having to move a vehicle off the carriageway. This causes longer delays to traffic stuck behind.

What’s wrong with pulling a manual handle anyway?
