More runs anyone??

I have recently re-joined the club after an absence of leave and have noticed a shift from local runs to more adventurous trips and weekends away i.e Mercedes World etc. Whilst these trips and weekends etc are great, some members, due to commitments or financial constraints (particularly at the moment) are unable to invest the time or money in a whole weekend away or the longer trips, but can spare a few hours on a Sunday to have a nice drive in the country. Whilst I understand that the calendar is full, is this relative lack of runs due to focus being shifted elsewhere, or due to a lack of people wanting to organise or lead runs? Would there be sufficient uptake to hold a run at the same time that one of the larger events is also happening? The recent volume of cars at the Cromer run would possibly suggest so? So is this due to no one wanting to organise a run or there just not being allocated time on the calender for runs? Perhaps we need more adhoc runs this year for when the weather is looking particularly nice eg last weekend? It seems a shame to be part of the Eastern Region but not actually drive our local roads anymore.

Please note that this is not a complaint in respect of the organisation as I believe the co-ordinators have a mountainous task with limited appreciation for the work they do, I am merely establishing the rationale for the shift and to gauge opinions – I appreciate the web usage is a relatively small sample of the Eastern Region members though.

Regards

Matt

The Mercedes Benz World trip is in addition to, not instead of, the local runs, purely because it was suggested at one of the area meetings and a few people said they would be interested.

Check out the ER Calendar and you will see the following local runs (all pretty much established as annual events)

26 April - Cambridgeshire

14 June - Essex

5 July - North Norfolk

15 August - Norfolk

18 October - Suffolk

31 October - Halloween Run

16 December - Norwich Xmas Lights

Thats one a month with the exception of May and September, which feature the Spring and National Rallies respectively (and longer runs)

Most of us like to go for drive on a warm sunny Sunday, so go along to your local meet and put forward one of your own - I’m sure there will be some interest.

Thank you for your reply James. Referring to my original post you will see that i agree there is a place for the longer trips and weekends, however my point refers back that between the May to September period there are 3 runs which seems quite low for the summer months and potentially the other calender items could be supported alongside more runs? Particularly given my comments re other personal commitments and financial strain that may be being felt in the region at the moment that prevent attendance at the longer trips.

I take your point re offering up my assistance and organising a run, you’ll note from the calender that I organise the Essex run alongside my father and Ady. However my point is that: are there less runs because this was a conscious planning decision or is there no uptake for attendance or organisation? I’d be happy to support more runs but unless we are clear about the prevous points this would be academic. From your post i am unclear where your stance is?

Matt

One thing I think we definately need to do is re-establish a run of some sort on the monthly meet, and make a big deal out of it, even if it’s just the ‘normal’ one from Sproughton. we’d quite regularly get 10-20 cars for the convoy and nowadays we struggle to get 3. This is a perfect opportunity to get a nice run over all together without having to organise an end point etc as this is already set … at least 50% of the reason I used to come to monthly meets was because of the run over in convoy with everyone and show off our 5’s.

Any chance we can get a number for a run over on the next meet ??

You do have some good points Matt, local runs are the essence of the club…

But, you mentioned the number of cars at Cromer this was due to the amount of areas involved and the weather, we would never achieve anything like that in the Eastern Region on its own, although I would love to be proved wrong!

In January Martin and i stood up and invited all present to organize runs on a voluntary basis, we even offered to pay peoples petrol money for doing it, and apart from one run (which has been put on hold and may be run ad-hoc just as you have suggested), the calendar reflects all that volunteered, please take a look, there are still events that need volunteers! But personally i was very pleased with the response.

The shift toward some larger events is in some way in addition to local ones, this is due to feedback we received last year, whilst a few of us are happy to go and purely drive, many like the social side after wards and socializing is always better at a nice venue such as Duxford or Merc World, these venues are also ideal for inclement weather, the drive and the visit to a venue constitute the best of both worlds, and people are more than welcome to disappear after just the drive part, as many did with Duxford.

The cost is another factor we have considered, venues like Merc World are completely free to get in to and at venues like Duxford we have tried hard to find money saving measures such as Tesco clubcard points, to save as much money as possible, the Picnic in the park event later this year has free entry to Sandrigham Scenic Drive so the only cost will be fuel and a picnic.

It has to be noted that Ad-Hoc runs are somewhat of a problem, unless properly researched for both parking, catering and loo stops we would rightly be open to criticism for organizing a run with no facilities, the majority are not happy to pee in a field and would certainly not be happy if the route for the run had roadworks blocking it. You could research a run and keep it on hold, but not many people are willing to put that much effort in, organizing a run just for it to just go onto a shelf and not know when the fruits of their toil will be used. But despite all this as we said earlier we are considering doing one ad-hoc run during the summer with probably little more notice than an e-mail a couple of days beforehand.

Looking back at last year here: http://www.mmmjaycee.f2s.com/ERevents08.pdf

There were 5 “local” runs, organized by the Eastern Region (the Fish and Chip run was organized by Northampton totally last year)

In 2009 here: http://www.mx5oc.co.uk/forum/forums/t/2280.aspx

There are 10 “local” runs, (we organized the Fish and Chip fun from Thetford this year) not including the ad-hoc one, or the Monopoly run down to Brooklands this Sunday.

Ady has a good point point about runs to monthly meets, although all of the attendants to last months Suffolk meet managed to get around just one table (Norfolk meets have also been low on numbers during the winter) and assuming they all came from the same direction, it would have still been a very small run, but probably still worth while, as i think the more we do at the meets the more people will come. It has worked well at the Norfolk meet which this year has two runs departing from the meet venue and returning an hour or so later so all attendees get the chance to run it.

As always Martin and I look forward to all offers of help, this years full calendar is taking some doing! I realize you appreciate the effort that goes in, and I hope this in some way answers some of your questions, as i said at the start, the runs are the essence of the club and I hope to see as many members on as many runs as possible this year.

Thanks for your comments, all feed back is always welcome[:D]

Just a thought but…

Over the years the Eastern Region has discovered some great driving roads and attractive locations in East Anglia and we have run many ‘local’ drives all of which have been planned with printed route instructions/maps.

Why not save these in the Club’s download section and create an ER archive so that if anyone fancies organising a quick ‘ad hoc’ run (or fancies a drive out on their own) there’s a ready made selection to choose from. This library can then be updated with new routes and should keep growing to cover virtually all of our area.

Jon

Just to say, Captain Muppet and I will be hosting a local run from the Countryman pub (regular Norfolk meet) on 20th May as our joint co-ordinators will still be in Yorkshire post Spring rally! We will be using a route used by Lotus to test their cars, so it should be short, sharp and to the point!! We plan to meet at the Countryman at 8.00 as normal, but then drive off at 8.15 and return about 9.00. So if it is a nice summers evening, please come up!

Sounds like fun - shame we shall bet at the Spring Rally too. Good luck the pair of you.

I think this is a good idea. This is what we need to be doing at meets, especially during the summer. I’m sorry I won’t be around for this one.

I think Matt has a point with respect to the fact that we are getting more ambitious with our destinations, not to say that this is a bad thing (It’s good to see some areas further afield) but it would be good to have a local run organised when the bigger events are on so that people who can’t make these have something to go to. Maybe this is when the adhoc runs come in? Or someone not going to a big event can oganise something. I like Jon’s idea of having the maps available. It would be good to be able to grab a map and post on the forum to see if anyone would be interested if there was nothing planned. Today was a good example of a nice weather day where we could have got a few cars together and run round the countryside to terrorise the locals [:D]

Anyway, just a thought.
