MOT failure advice. I'm buying from a dealership

Those subframe braces aren’t an indicator of the overall condition of the car. My car is in great shape generally but they were rotten - I replaced them both for 60 pounds with brand new items. Brakes are probably where the car has been sat and the discs and pads have suffered from heavy rusting causing the fluctuation on the machine, another common thing for what is generally a second/weekend car that also may have been sat on a forecourt for months. Aside from the items mentioned you’d have to note the condition of the underside, subframe, body etc in general but for 8k on a 1.8 I’d just keep looking for one without the issues.

Edit: these items came from an otherwise really nice car, first things I did when I bought it.

Thank to all. I don’t want to put the dealership on blast before I work out what I’m doing. I’m in the North West.

I don’t think anyone would slate them Greg, just interesting to know who sells what. I’m North West border (ST13) if you wanted to look at my 2010 to compare.

Thanks Dean. That gives me some hope. Apparently, I have 30 days to raise a complaint with the finance company, so I suspect I will get the car then take it to my mate’s garage and get it up on the ramp and let him tell me about the extent of any corrosion and take it from there.

I’ve been told by the garage that are doing the mot that it will be Friday at the earliest! This is after the guy from the dealership told me that the mot would be done by the end of the day/early in the morning. The alloys then need sorting and the car valeting, so it will be over two weeks since I signed for the car, before I get it (at the earliest).

I’d try and get a better look and make a decision before taking it, once it’s yours and the money is ‘handed over’ so to speak, it will be more difficult to get things sorted with the garage that sold it to you.

You’re perfectly entitled to exit during the ‘Cooling Off’ period. That’s what it’s there for.

Of course the finance company would say ‘it’s tricky’ - it’s in their interests for you to stick with it! All I’ll say is if you think it’s difficult now, wait until you’ve officially taken ownership…

The collective advice from us all is to walk away and find another example.

Just my two bobs worth. If you take your mate to the dealer unannounced, and tell them you are about to pull out of the deal unless they can prove to you that there are no major rust problems. Their next move will tell you everything. If they invite you into the workshop for a look underneath, then it usually means they have nothing to hide, and you may be able to get minor stuff sorted FOC also, they may be replacing stuff to get through the MOT anyway. If, however, they start with the “elf and safety Problem etc” then alarm bells should start to ring. It sounds to me like they are delaying things deliberately to get past the cooling off period. MOTs take about 45 mins don’t they? Whatever you do, DON’T take it out of the dealer premises until you are satisfied everything is ok.

But you have been doing that of sorts in some of your posts.

Of course it’s entirely your prerogative if you wish to name the dealership, or not as the case maybe, it is only that over so many an internet forum, folk have all sorts of disgruntled issues with dealerships, but for some reason seem tentative to say who they are.

Contact the finance company NOW and tell them the deal isn’t happening. You haven’t taken possession of the car yet, tell them the delaying tactics being used and you want to withdraw immediately. They won’t put up a fight as they have to work in your best interest. The more you delay, the trickier it will get. You need to take control in this matter.

Good call, that’s the right thing to do, I guess you feel pressured now after posting but everyone is only advising as they see fit and the advice is unanimous. Short term pain long term gain, please keep us updated on progress.

Unless a sale is a distance sale there is no cooling off period.

With the finance there will be a Right of Withdrawal which would give the consumer 14 days to find a better suited finance package elsewhere, i.e. If you were borrowing 8k you could finance 8k with a second lender and pay off the original lender without paying any charges/additional interest.

If you have signed the finance docs and your two weeks in without having the car that is a completely different issue which I would be discussing with the finance company as an out. Reading through this thread with the advisories/issues with the car would personally be taking my money elsewhere.

Thing is though, no one knows ‘where’ it is. You could take your money ‘elsewhere’, but arrive at the mysterious dealership is question :smiling_face_with_tear:

Sorry you have had such a negative experience, if you did not know the cause of the MOT failures to start with when you signed for the car and they did, I’d say you have a jolly good case for cancelling the order and running for the hills.

In your shoes I’d talk to the finance company to make them aware of your concerns they maybe able to help you further, if you have insurance legal or rescue cover for any motor vehicle you might be able to talk to them as well. Good luck.
