Same in Northern Ireland. The drawback being you have to book the test several weeks in advance. Over there, 3-4 inspectors are needed per car.  Cost is the same here, takes about the same amount of time. So do the maths; MOTs in NI are government subsidised.

There is an argument made that givern the requirements of the MOT, garages are making a loss on conducting the test.

I’m a confirmed cynic when it comes to servicing and MOTs.Ā  Years of experience suggests one should suspect everything and be pleasantly surprised when all is OK.

My Mazda3 had its third year service, first MOT (half price with a service) and ā€œWiper Motor Control Module Recallā€ done today by the main dealer in Watford.

As usual I valeted the car first so it was immaculate, filled the washer bottle to the top of the spout, very visible, and marked the oil filter and air cleaner each with a tiny dab of old touch-up, small enough to miss if not looking for it.Ā  Oil filter is right under the car at the back of the engine and behind a cover, awkward to get to if not on a lift, but just visible from the back on driver’s side.Ā  They were both changed, as was the long thin module in the fusebox. And the car was not washed - as instructed.

The pollen filter was not listed or changed (a common failing by dealers with most makes of car), so I’ve ordered one on Az, hopefully the correct part.

Pass with flying colours and all good until I looked at the bill.  It included £4.99 for washer fluid!  So I asked for the £4.99 to be removed, and they grudgingly did so, but many people might miss that.  The level in the filler spout had dropped by about two inches, ample to test both wash/wipes, no way they might have used a litre.  With the previous dealer (now shut down) and the MX5 I was charged for fluid (fixed price service) but they put the unused full bottle in the boot.

you can try other third party sites if you are looking to check other related issues i guess
