They are totally inconsistent at the same centres, I guess its down to the actual tester, last year we had rust advisories this year none. We’ve done nothing to the car in between
That is the unfortunate problem when something is not black or white.
As soon as is a subjective rather than objective item - every tester will have their own standard.
My testing station is very consistent. Every year I get an advisory to say that “the level of the power steering fluid could not be checked due to the colour of the reservoir”.
Every year I explain that the level is checked by means of the dipstick under the reservoir cap, and every year the tester says he isn’t allowed to remove anything on the car.
Surely if the fluid level has to be checked during the test, then the method provided by the vehicle manufacturer does not amount to dismantling.
Another favourite meaningless advisory is “Undertrays fitted preventing inspection of the underside”.
Personally (in my opinion) the tester is wrong to give an advisory on yours.
As you have “No Sight Glass” he can’t tell whether it is low fluid or not.
He does so because of the “colour of the reservoir”…
How about you give him a bright torch and I bet he can see the level then.
Therefore, he is wrong to give you an advisory of low fluid, because he can’t see or tell!
If he can’t check it, how can he say it’s low??
It’s either low or it isn’t.
There is no specific advisory that I can see to say he can give you an “advisory because he can’t check it”.
2.1.5. Power steering
If power steering is not working, you may have to do a road test to check if the steering is adversely affected.
Power steering fluid level should be checked through any sight glass, the cap should not be removed.
Power steering fluid leaks should only be rejected where a component, joint or seal has failed.
